True Adventure--Living in a Motorcycle Pop-Up Trailer

  • Published on Jun 21, 2019
  • Today we have a real treat--we meet Kevin who is living full-time on a motorcycle with a pop-up trailer he tows behind it. You'd think that it must be a teeny-tiny camped space, but as you'll see when we go inside, it is surprisingly large and has plenty of room for comfortable living!
The motorcycle is a 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere that is a dual-sport model which means it does reasonably well on dirt roads and in the backcountry, opening up a huge amount for exploring and solitude in gorgeous country. It is Adventure Riding at it's very best.
I must admit to being very jealous of Kevin and his setup because it is about the ultimate in freedom and adventurous living! As a young man I owned two different long-distance touring motorcycles and rode one of them up the Alaska Highway from Eureka, California to Anchorage, Alaska in the early 80s long before the Alaska Highway was paved. It was a very long, cold ride and I ran into construction with extremely muddy roads and even some snow, but I loved every second of it and look back on it as one of the best experiences of my life!

After some traveling on my own and roughing it for a few years all of a sudden my wife who wouldn't go near my bike decided she wanted a ride. I rode her around the block and she was hooked. For several years after we traveled each year with a group of friends on bikes. We quickly filled my saddlebags, and added a luggage rack and then packs until the damm thing was so loaded down and back heavy that I started to worry about losing steering control. Then she started showing me pictures of bike trailers and that's where I drew a line in the sand.
After watching this I might reconsider and see if I could get somethings off the bike and onto the trailer.

When you travel in a car you watch pictures pass by. When you ride a bike you ride in the warmth of the sun and down under the tree canopy into coolness. You smell cut grass, barbeque, pine. Lavender and food cooking, etc. It stimulates all your senses. There is an overwhelming feeling of freedom. Any depression, stress or anxiety disappears as the wind blows through your hair.
I have traveled on my Harley Road King with a small tent and slept on a "tanker roll" like I did in the Army but that was nothing like this rig.

Great setup. I do it old school as I can’t justify the extra expense of a trailer for as few times as I get a chance to camp solo and it is a pain to setup a sportbike to pull a trailer. You mentioned towing with a Toyota Corolla, I was surprised when I bought my corolla for commuting that it has a 1500 pound tow rating.

Do be careful sir. I am arguably the safest driver one can come across. However, recently on a drive to Yellowstone I came down with a terrible illness and actually passed out briefly and drifted into oncoming traffic. What a horrible mishap, thankfully there was no cars passing at the moment. Could have been deadly, especially for a motorcyclist.

There's a company in Osoyoos British Columbia and in Oroville Washington that they build a trailer along that same lines called a Lees ure Lite. And they're dry weight is between 225 and 250 depending on your options.
And there right around 5500 Canadian and can go up to about 65 Canadian

I love your cool new outro segment. Nice to see the expansion of an Amazon store for the products you trust, use, and have tested here on your TVclip channel. It really brings it home to see an easy one-stop shopping experience to so many of us who are inspired to live a better way. Even though I am starting over late in my life and cannot hit the open road it serves as a way to plan ahead for cheaper living at home using solar, wind generators, etc at a scale I can afford. And without giving up some creature comforts.
Thanks to you and your friends for making this life style easy to access :)

My parents have a similar trailer for their gold wing. These are nice and come with lots of options depending on who makes it. Insulated sides, and a slot to put in a small ac unit for when you have access to power. Add a blow up mattress to help with the kinda thin one built in, and these are outright luxurious, I blown away first time I seen it.
