OK, this is exciting and scary. So, while I wait for the time at which we are all coordinated for this thing to go live let me tell you how this worked.
First, the designer got the manuscript, then they read it, then they sent me three sample covers that I did not like. They were obviously rough mockups, but I didn't like the direction. There was good energy, but all of the fonts were hand-written and, honestly, I wanted it to look visibly distinct from a John Green book.
So then I sent them a few things:
    1. Three images that I really liked that were not book covers. They all had bold colors, repeating patterns, and felt illustrated but now hand-drawn.
    2. A few of my favorite recent book covers.
    3. A few lines, less than 400 words about what I really hoped for that included this sentence: "Getting the mix between high energy and fun and deadly serious is something I thought a lot about when writing, and it's hard, but it may be an impossible thing to hope for in a cover design."
Then a few weeks went by during which time I was assured that a lot of time and thought were going into sending a long a more finished product that took my thoughts into account. I feel very lucky that I got to have this much feedback.
What I then got in my email was five designs...three of which were color variations on the final product. And I was like, "YES! THIS!" but then of course I had some thoughts. I asked for some other color treatments, and I also suggested adding the eyes to one of the Carls, which I think is a very cool touch. In the end, I went with one of the original color schemes but was glad I had seen the others anyway. And with a couple of very very minor finishing thoughts we had it.
I have a lot more thoughts on covers and I could critique great design all day, but I only had four minutes. I feel bad that there are so many great covers out there (and on my bookshelf right now) that I didn't get to talk about, but there are only so many minutes in a vlogbrothers video and only so many hours in a day!
Thanks everybody, I hope you like it!

it reminds of how the cover of Chasing Vermeer feels. It's like cartoony, and you can tell it's meant to be accesible to young adults, but it still has an element of mystery that you know would pull you in as a reader.

Hi Hank! I''ve been checking in for the last couple of months and I have a question... Do you know who will narrate the audiobook version of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing? I really want to pre-order the audiobook version but not knowing the narrator is causing me to hold off on my order. Bad narrators have ruined amazing pieces of literature for me in the past so if/when you do know who will be given the amazing honour of narrating your book, can you please, please, please let the world know? 😊. I really would love to read the paper copy (as the cover looks incredible) but I've found that audiobooks allow me to satisfy my love of literature whilst removing the limitations I faces as someone with severe ADHD (predominantly inattentive characteristics). When it comes to memorising and engaging with a text, my brain has always soaked up aural stimuli like a sponge. Congratulations on such an amazing achievement! I am so very excited and cannot wait to hear who the narrator for your audiobook version will be! -ix 😊

Hank, nothing about your cover seemed mysterious or creepy... until I saw that only one of the humanoid figures has eyes. I’m not sure why but all of a sudden, realizing I was being watched, gave me the exact feeling I’m sure you were excited about.

my favorite book covers are the old terry pratchett covers. I mean, if you look at any of the original covers, you know that they are in the same world, same series, as the art style is the same, and you can tell how... strange the world is going to be, just because of the weird style it uses.

Okay I don't want to sound like those crazy know it all fan girls, plus I am 11 anyway, I would like to challenge the analogy in your book the Fault In Our Stars. Let me just say the movie was so much more different than the book and when Hazel Grace said you cant truly find happiness unless you felt pain. People do it every day and I credit you for that but you cant give true sympathy for a person unless you truly know what they have been through. Maybe that is what it means so I credit you for that too. I love your books and I would love a continuation of the book The Fault In Our Stars. Only if you are comfortable with writing another book.
    -With the utter most respect

Judge a book by its cover? Who has time for that these days? As we skim past the shelves, rushing towards our next commitment, we scan and pick a book by its spine. Maybe we'll get a glance at its cover as the staff flip it and scan the barcode. Then we're off out of the store, and rushing forward into our life again.
I like the design and am sure it will standout well on the shelves. Using enough visual language to indicate its genre and style, but keeping it fresh and new at the same time. Well balanced.

I love the colour! Great shades of blue and green! And I realise I have similar tastes in book covers as you, Hank. Bright, sort of simple (but if you think about it or look closer there are hidden elements/clues). This, in turn, explains why I'm not a fan of many fantasy, sci-fi and crime covers, they're usually to full of detail and in muted colours.

First off -- I really like the cover and I'm so excited to read the book! I'm sure it's going to be great! :)
Second -- I agree with you Hank. No matter the truth that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I can't help but let the cover influence books I buy. I like having good looking editions of books. I like to roam around the Fantasy section trying to figure out what book looks interesting. That's how I found Pat Rothfuss' and Scott Lynch's books. Both of which I love. A lot! However if they had (to quote from an earlier video of yours) "a half naked guy on a horse with a sword" on the cover I would have probably not picked them up because they wouldn't have captured my attentino as well.
