How to fix the Spider-Man Box Art:
Scenic shot of New York City instead of the red background

    • Shawn Fields
      Shawn Fields 2 days ago

You CAN fix the Spider-Man box art! Do what I did. Take the game's cover, and check if it has the reversible cover, with Spider-Man jumping from a building, with iconic things in the background, like a re-elect Norman Osborn poster in the background, the slogan of the Daily Bugle, and a bunch of buildings in the background with a close-up on Spider-Man. And if it does, flip the cover around with the generic one. Ta-da! Cover officially fixed! And, the spine of the cover is still the same as the original one, so it doesn't stand out awkwardly on your shelf!

This video essay speaks to me. In 2001 I was doing a course in visual communication, design and graphic art - given the option to develop a marketing campaign I chose the Gamecube title "Eternal Darkness" which wouldn't be released until after I graduated. I did a photoshoot using a human skull, candle and books, made a new logo, wrote the copy for the back cover. Even made a 2 page spread advertisement and inserted it into an imported Nintendo Power magazine.
Really freaking hard to do that back then, saving to floppy disks and trying to get things at 300dpi on a 386mhz.
It is certainly curious what design decisions that million dollar companies make about cover art - but if you already have it in your hands, it's easy as pie to print fan art, alternative art or make your own. $2 at Kinkos, 45 minutes on Photoshop and forever on your shelf is time well spent.

    • Shawn Fields
      Shawn Fields 20 days ago

Really? I prefer the box art for P5. There's also reversible cover art for the Spider-Man game, which does a much better job of being good box art than the actual art. Which isn't always indicative of the game's quality, but good box art does help give you a good first impression of said game. But for me, I'm just glad to get the games, regardless of what the box art looks like, though I do love and appreciate good box art. Like for Yakuza Kiwami, well, the special version, there's the 2 main characters, Nishiki, and Kiryu, along with Haruka in the middle, and when you slide the cover off, you see how Haruka fits with Kiryu walking with her, trying to protect her. Good box art says a lot about a game, and can speak volumes about the quality of a game sometimes. But, even the worst box art can say good things too. Don't forget that, dude.

  • Kristin Bergh
Kristin Bergh 29 days ago +1

Are video games art? Well it's a major at Ringling which is where I got my illustration degree from and they're a _really_ respected art school in the graphic art industry. And video game design is one of their _majors._ That's enough for me, that's for damn sure.

    • Shawn Fields
      Shawn Fields 20 days ago

@Kristin Bergh No problem, sir/ma'am! Glad to help. I couldn't agree with you more. Games are complex art, like playing a movie. And, they're better at telling stories than some movies are, man, some games are even prequels or sequels to movies, or just better than the movies they're based on, or live in infamy, like E.T. on Atari, which was so bad, they literally buried unsold copies of it in a desert, which was an urban legend for years, until they were actually found in said desert. I'm glad I could say something helpful. I'm usually not that good at talking, I get shy around girls, and am generally bad at talking, but through playing games, I've learned a lot myself. The first game I've ever played was Super Mario 64, when I was 3. It was a present from my grandma, who died on Christmas of 2018. My dad was there when they pulled the plug. But, me and my mom live in Vegas, so we couldn't be there for him in person, but we did manage to pull him out of it, and help him. And, as long as I keep playing games, I won't forget that it was my grandma who helped me get into gaming in the first place. I've also read an article about how games have inspired people, helped out hospital patients, like people who've lost limbs, and help them in other ways. It was a really nice article, which was in a magazine called game informer. I don't have the issue it was in, but it was great to see how games could do so much for people. Now, my good sir/lady, those are just some of the ways games have inspired me to believe that they're art. And that they're the best kind of art, in my opinion.

    • Kristin Bergh
Kristin Bergh 20 days ago +1

@Shawn Fields Thanks, man, that was really kind of you.😊
And exactly. Video games have become so advanced and immersive that they're basically _interactive_ movies. They require every bit of developmental art that animated movies take in concept art, storyboarding, character and environment designs, etc., with the added elements of UI and gameplay. Not only are video games art, they're really _complex_ art.

    • Shawn Fields
Shawn Fields 20 days ago +1

I agree dude. When I first heard about whether or not games were art, I of course thought they were art, able to express things in a different, yet similar way to that of movies or songs. Also, good for you, hope you keep illustrating things and go on to be a top illustrator or whatever your dream is, dude.

As odd as it sounds, I feel like some of the Fallout boxart, while doing almost the exact same thing, were better than others. In 1, it emphasized a dystopian America, with the BOS, the most powerful human faction, a key focus. Fallout 2 showed how the world has since changed, basically, there's a new bigger, badder faction in town. New Vegas, the NCR, a growing faction from 1 and 2 has become the biggest force in the west(although it doesn't capture the game to the same extent as the others). 3, 4, and 76 just copied 1 and 2, without really doing anything(76 just being the armour on Fallout 1's boxart, from a side angle)
