A very good movie based off a good book BUT this trailer TOTALLY misrepresents what the film is actually about. They are making it seem one way when what is actually in the film is totally something else.

This movie is about PTSD not Jennifer Anniston, watch before judging...it's about friendship, loyalty and family...a bond. It has nothing to do with anti-war statements or anti-semitism, so stfu. If you can watch this, and not feel moved...then you never experienced the loss of someone who got lost.

Don, I was in the Army, trained with the Marines also, talked to scores of young soldiers over the years... ethnics, blacks do not especially serve to be glorified as in movies. They want stability in life, to help their families, to build their credit, to have a shot a retirement. Not all white men want to die a hero, a lot grew up with weapons, hunting skills, like me. Historically, black men are known heros, fighter pilots, divers, rocks to their families.

+Delaney Gunn Thank you for your story! I was very fascinated by it! I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to be doing with my life for I am still in Highschool but your experience has inspired me to look further in my opportunities. I also live in Canada (Toronto).

    • Delaney Gunn
      Delaney Gunn 15 days ago

Redknight li ... sorry didn’t see the entirety of your last post.
I did apply, my uncle was a medic in the Army so I leaned on him a ton. In the end, the career I was in at the time was so volatile that the idea of a steady paycheque was really enticing, plus growing up always playing sports, the idea of being on a team again and being part of something bigger than myself was very exciting.
Unfortunately, the Forces (I am Canadian) have very political views and will try and force potential recruits into areas of the service that they need filled/ have a hard time filling/ retaining. Because I had a technical diploma they wanted me to take a tech/ engineering jobs, but the major reason for me wanting to join the Army was to get away from the tech side of things. I wasn’t good at it, and I hated it, and I didn’t want to be miserable in the Army. It took over three years to process my application, and accept me in the position I had wanted, but With no contact, and assuming the Army had moved on, I also moved on and actually pursued a career in sports. By the time the recruiters reached out to me to tell me I had been accepted for further processing, I was in a totally different frame of mind. Work was/ is satisfying, I had gotten way way way out of shape. It took me about a week of serious contemplation, but I was too excited about my current path to uproot my life again! It was a very tough decision, very tough.

    • Delaney Gunn
      Delaney Gunn 18 days ago

Much more than the book went into my decision making. Like I said at the end of the last post, there were plenty of factors that went into it. But in terms of the books/ documentaries that stood out to me at the time, this book was definitely one that stopped me in my tracks

    • Redknight li
      Redknight li 18 days ago

+Delaney Gunn That's incredible; letting a book decide your future. I usually consult the opinions of others before making hard decisions like those because they have experience. If you don't mind me asking, did you actually end up joining the army or not?

    • Delaney Gunn
      Delaney Gunn 18 days ago

Well if I am reading between the lines of your original post, Hollywood generally isn't interested in telling stories about war that doesn't glorify the horrors that truly effect these people.
Back when this book was released I was in the middle of deciding if I wanted to join the army so I started reading all sorts of books on the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Books like Generation Kill, One Bullet Away, and The Yellow Birds. I watched movies/ documentaries like the Korengal, Hornets Nest, and the Messenger.
In the end it was this book, The Yellow Birds, and the film The Messenger that had the most influence on my decision. Of course there were plenty of other factors that went into my decision, but in terms of m "research" it was those two pieces that effected me the most.

The problem I have with these movies is, they keep focusing on Americans committing war crimes, fighting an unjust war for corrupt leaders, and coming back home screwed up in the head. As a vet, I know how bad war can be, and of course some of that does happen. But you have to admit, these films are basically anti-war, written by anti-war people, and I am just afraid that they tip a little too close to being anti-American as well. I think there is a value there, but they do not honestly portray the reality of the people who serve and fight and do so honorably, and who seriously care about the people in those countries, who are the real victims of our enemies. I just get tired of it. I would like some balance.
