With the sand paper thing you tear from one end the sand paper and then there is some cardboard so that you can sharpen your charcoal by going back and forth
    Edit:she googled it

Last post, I promise! Very nice drawing! Helpful hint #1002 - We used batting, more often than not, real cotton batting to make a pillow which protected the piece from smudging when working on an area. Usually when you get to details you have a ton of dust on your piece. Mom (who was an artist for over 70 years) used a blow dryer on low to blow away the dust then the pillow is where she rested her hand. Imagine using these tools to fix black and white photos, the lines where super fine drawing was need and a smudge could ruin the whole thing~

Sorry for is an idea, use these tools to make negative space pieces instead of line art. It is amazingly good to develop this skill since there are no "lines" in real life.

I stopped the video to type my last comment and found the place where the eraser stencil was used. This tool is incredibly important. Imagine you are ready to finally spray your finished piece and that diarrhea green was just too much and you wanted it gone. The problem is, it was right in the middle of the white!! So, you can use the eraser at the edge or through the shapes. It is really good for small areas and in the old days we used masking liquid to not only protect an area but to lift the medium!

Also, all the charcoal will smudge to hell and gone and disappear over time if you don't get some type of setting spray-
I would hate such a gorgeous ballerina disappear in a month or so because it wasn't protected :(
(last note, charcoal is kind of known at the most forgiving art supply because you can use your fingers and almost erase what you drew just by rubbing it out a bit. Works best with the vine charcoal which is SUPER soft.)

  • Rain / Slytherin Queen

Not even five mins in and I can already tell you hardly ever use charcoal... This is gonna be a fantastic video 😂

That sandpaper was to make your tortillians (Sorry can't spell) fresh, so instead of having pencil all over it you can sand it so it's clean paper again

  • Littlewings -
    Littlewings - Month ago

Not got all the way through the video yet so you may figure this out but the sandpaper is used to sharpen your charcoal/graphite sticks/pencils and you can use it to create charcoal/graphite dust which if you keep in a little pot you can apply with a paintbrush or with the paper stumps or maybe some tissue or paper towel etc to get a softer, lighter application.
Are the kneaded erasers from cheaper brands slightly harder? I recently got a 4 pack of Faber-Castell ones thinking I got a huge bargain (one eraser was £1.50 and I got a 4pk for £3) but when I went to use one the other day I found that it’s really soft and squishy, which is ok for larger areas but it is unable to hold a point or even a slimmer shape so you can use it on more finely detailed parts.
Is it perhaps worth mixing two or three of them together or will that not change the softness? Any tips to make them less squishy?

If you like the idea then turn the thumb blue

The sandpaper is fir cleaning your blending stumps when they get too dirty, and if you want to avoid smudging because you have to place your hand over your composition you can set down a clean sheet of paper to act as a barrier as long as you don't shift the paper too much it shouldn't smudge
