The illusion doesn't work unless I focus on one rectangle or another, and even then only for the first blink or blink and a half. Then they immediately return to out of phase. And when I focus on the middle (like you are asked to in most illusions) the bars appear out of phase no matter what.

The "in phase" illusion only works when you are looking at one of the phasing rectangles. When you look at a point in the middle of the screen, the illusion does not work and they remain out of phase.

They seemed out of phase either way.

Hmmm... not working for me... more precisely, when they're supposed to be "in phase" it works only for the first "blink", then off again. I wonder why.

It worked perfectly the first time I tried it but on a 2nd viewing it didn't seem to work so well. Maybe i was paying closer attention this time or something. weird.

It worked at first and then after a while my brain didn't want to accept your sorcery and it stopped working.

Neither. If you stare at the middle dividing line, they never go in phase
