    Some notes:
We each repeated the experiment 3 times, and got the same results every time. For those of you who might be skeptical, great! A right circular prismatic kiddie pool is only $10 and you can do the experiment for yourself at your latitude. There's really no reason you shouldn't do it for yourself.

Gordon McGladdery did all of the sound design for the video. We used two songs from other artists (licensed of course). Derek split the first one up so it fades from video to video, and Gordon split the instruments up on the second one. There are violins on one video and percussion on the other for example. It's really neat.
The neat earth animation at the beginning and the synchronizing timer was made by eisenfeuer.com/. He also made still images of the earth from the top and the bottom.

Direction of flow is determined by the manufacturers design of the Basin bowl or whatever it is. There's no way for us to determine or tell if the surface he had the pool on wasn't altered in a way to let the water flow in the direction he wanted it to.

What foolishness. The guy did the experiment ONE TIME. True science requires the experiment to be done several times. Was the pool on perfectly level ground? He didn’t take that into account. Here’s one more thing, which way does the water drain at the poles? I guarantee that it would spin in either direction. Everyone in here is congratulating this guy but no one thinks for themselves. Sheeple.

I think your experiment lacks accuracy by some orders of magnitude ... The difference in velocity caused by Earth's rotation at the location of Sydney for a pool with the diameter of 2m roughly will be 81 um/s which will cause an angular speed of 20 u rad/s ... Which requires far more precise experiment than the one you just performed. Just to make all this clear those sticks you used to show that the water in the pool is still will complete a full rotation in 3.6 days at 20 u rad/s

Hey guys, just a quick fyi, yes, coriolis is a real effect, but alas, no one could ever prove that the earth rotates. According to Mach's Principle, the SAME effect would be experienced on a stationary earth in a revolving starfield. Imagine the starfield as a spinning tire, whose center a gravity is empty space. You can put whatever you want in that space and the tire won't touch it. This is Mach's Principle, and is it ever more valid since: 1. No test ever conducted to prove the earth rotates, or moves at all for that matter, has succeeded, and 2. Mach's Principle requires the earth to occupy a unique position in the cosmos, and ALL quanitifable and measurable observations ever conducted have led to just that. Crazy, huh? Crazy awesome.

Water at the edges is faster and thus displaces the one near the center creating a vortex, what I dont understand is what determines the direction. It's not that the earth is rotating a different direction in two hemispheres.

I am a machinist in California. We have machined a lot of water well shafts, bearings and housings. I once asked one of the older pump guys why most pumps turned counter clockwise (ie left handed threads). The only answer he could give me was that left handed pumps were more efficient. When I explained the counterclockwise whirlpool thing I think he got it.
I wonder if all the pumps down under are right handed. Hey! Derek Do you know what direction the water well pumps turn in Australia?

I appreciate that you showed the experiment in big container, but the point is, you should see in the sink and toilets too. The two sinks you show at @1:39 are just asymmetric, and then the motion is quite complicated. But if the sinks are symmetric, then you will the same effect there too.

    Inconclusive.
I'm guessing that you have some additional footage of you leveling the surfaces... but regardless, a plywood platform is hardly reliable to be perfectly level. I'm not conviced that you've eliminated all variables. You would also need to get the creases out of the bottom of the pools, shield the pools from electromagnetic influences, perform the experiment at the same time of day or night with the sun/moon in the same point in the sky and on similar phase of the moon cycle etc.
I would have been transparent to see the results of the other two times you ran the experiment (especially if you spent another 24 hours each time waiting for the water to settle).

Sorry I'm two years late. To be slightly more scientific, the pool should both be filled clockwise as a control, observe the results, Then repeated when filled counter clockwise and observe the results. I suppose you may have done that, but wasn't shown in the video. If yours was filled counter clockwise and destin's clockwise, one may perceive the swirl to be opposite of the direction of filling the pool

I have a question. so why the water stays stationary when the whole is sealed. You think the rotation of the earth influences the water only when its moving? how can that be explained?

    • kallewirsch2263
      kallewirsch2263 4 months ago +1

I agree. But the point is to demonstrate something not to proove it. The Coriolis force and what it does is known since centuries.
Besides: in the footnote they note that every party has repeated the eperiment 3 times with always the same result. Also consider: Destin did his experiment in a garage, so no wind. Also: they filled the pool in the exact opposite direction then the expected spin direction.
I have not done the math but I agree: the force is very low and it is easy to mess things up. I also have my doubts that this indeed is a demonstration of the Coriolis force. I too think the pool is to small for the forces to build up the vortex. But I cannot proove the opposite. And after all it is just a demonstration. We know that the Coriolis force is out there, where it comes from and what it does to the weather systems. No need to proove it.

    • Simopr Dev
      Simopr Dev 4 months ago

thanks kallewirsch2263. I had to read what you wrote 3 times to get a sense of it. But I still think that experiment is biased. It was done once. That force is some much negligible I think. A force generated by the wind might be stronger than the one generated by the earth's rotation. And that back of water is so small to scale this theory up accurately.

    • kallewirsch2263
      kallewirsch2263 4 months ago +1

Because you need to have a movement towards the center. If there i no such movement then each water "particle" just moves around the earth axis on its own path. It is the movment towards the center and that each water "particle" takes with it its rotational velocity while moving to the draining hole that creates that effect. Look up the graphics near the end (the one where you look down to the pole) and it should become much more clearer.
Keep in mind: yes, the particle farther away from earth axis is faster. But it also has a longer way around the axis. Those 2 things cancel each other so that both particles (the one nearer to the axis and the one farther from the axis) need 24 hours for one full rotation around earth axis. In fact it is pretty much the same reason of why a wheel does not fall apart even if the rim moves much faster then a part of the wheel near the center. Both parts have the same angular velocity around the axis.

Interesting! A lot of time I know about the Coriolis Effect. I never read nothing that real proves it or not, in very small experiments with the rotation of the earth!
How many experiments you need to make to real prove it? And how it works in Equator!? no rotation!? the intensity of the rotation should change with the distance to the Equator!!? You pretend that this video real proves it?
I like a lot the way you made the experiment!

assuming you could eliminate all other influences it would not spin at all. But this is not a realistic scenario since you simple cannot eliminate everything else. As soon as some tiny spin has built up, may it be due to wind or impurities or tiny particles in the pool or wrinkles or ... (you get the picture) the spin would amplify itself.

No, NO GO! IN ORDER THIS EXPERIMENT TO REACH VALID RESULTS IT MUST BE REPEATABLE AND REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES TO COME TO A CONCLUSIVE STATISTICAL RESULT. ALSO I NOTICED THE DRAIN PIPE IS PENDING TO A SPECIFIC DIRECTION. THAT JUST ALONE WILL PRODUCE A SPECIFIC POLARIZATION VORTEX ON THE WATER.
DRAIN PIPE WITH THE STOP LID SHOULD NOT BEND TO ANY DIRECTION JUST LOCATED STRAIGHT BELOW THE DRAIN OPENING WITHOUT BENDING TO ANY DIRECTION. ALSO WHEN YOU DRAW THE PIPE LID TO INITIATE THE FLOW TRY NOT TO TWIST IT JUST PULL IT STRAIGHT.
IT WOULD BE BETTER TO USE AN ELECTRIC CATAPULT VALVE (NOT A MECHANIC TURN VALVE, THESE ARE KNOWN TO PRODUCE VORTICES BY THEME SELF). YOU FAILED TO ELIMINATE ALL THE SIDE FACTORS. ALSO THE EXPERIMENT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT INDOORS AND NOT OUTDOORS AS YOU DID. WITH NO AIR MOVEMENT, SOUNDS OR ANY OTHER MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS.
THE SLIGHTEST EXTERNAL FORCE BESIDES EARTH'S GRAVITATIONAL ROTATION WILL INITIATE A POLARIZED VORTEX ON THE WATER DRAINING DOWN!
YOU MUST ELIMINATE ALL THESE FACTORS BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT STARTS. ALSO TO BE MORE SCIENTIFIC WATER IF IT'S NOT DISTILLED CAN BE SLIGHTLY PARA MAGNETIC AND THEREFORE CAN BE INFLUENCED BY EARTHS MAGNETIC VORTEX. THUS BESIDES USING DISTILLED WATER AND NOT TAP WATER I WOULD SUGGEST TO COMPLETELY ENCLOSE THE WHOLE POOL AND DRAIN PIPE WITH A FARADAY CAGE.
YOU PROVED NOTHING AND FAILED TO DEMONSTRATED THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD.
    HAVE A NICE DAY!
