5 Ways Economics Can Help You Lose Weight- Econ IRL Episode 2

  • Published on May 16, 2017
  • Thanks for watching. My name is Jacob Clifford and I am a teacher, TVclipr, and economist. I made this video to help you, your family member, or your friend focus on their physical and financial health. Remember, losing weight and saving money requires the same principles. You have to know the numbers, create goals, have patience, start now, and hold yourself accountable.
Please feel free to join me by making a goal and sharing it on TVclip. If you post it on social media, please use #TVclipGoal. Even if you don’t create a goal, please be sure to watch my results video in October. I need your help to keep me accountable.
Why am I doing this? I gained 35lbs in the last 14 months and I wanted something to get me off the couch. To be honest, I’m a little scared and nervous, but this is exactly the kick in the pants that I needed. Economists know that incentives matter and I’m not going to let you or myself down. It’s time to get to work! Thanks again for watching.
One more thing, I don't tell people this, but I disort my videos to make me look thinner. I hope that in 5 months I don't have to do that :)

Way to go! This morning I stepped on the scale and saw a number I didn't like...the heaviest I've ever been and started to dwell on my new healthy eating habits starting this upcoming Monday. Then I went grocery shopping and bought chocolate eclairs....why? because 1 more isn't going to make a difference! Then I sat down to start studying for my econ test tomorrow and saw this video...guess I wont eat those eclairs I'm sure my kids will love me for them. Good Luck!

How to lose weight sure is calories in vs calories out. However losing fat is a bit different and I think peoples goal isn't to lose weight its to lose fat. To lose weight you need to drop insulin and you want to use up the glycogen stores. Then your body has used up its quick energy so then it uses ketons as its energy next which is fat cells. When your body starts running on this ketons its when you cause yourself to lose fat cells cause they're being used. Fat loss is simple its just that nobody does the work.

This is a good video, and great advice from a practical standpoint.
However I would point out one important thing: We actually know now that it isn't quite as simple as calories in vs calories out. (Well, it is, but the calories out number changes.) There are a few reasons for that including changing metabolic rate, changing muscle mass (if you don't lift weights while doing weight loss), and the psychology surrounding exercise (doing exercise, especially aerobic, actually makes your body overcompensate and make you hungrier than required). Some people also believe that your body reaches certain set points where it resists further weight loss, though we still need to test this scientifically and confirm the mechanism. Nevertheless, it's clear that in many ways our bodies are evolutionarily conditioned to resist weight loss, which makes it a real challenge, where as the calories in, calories out model suggests both directions are equally easy.

A few takeaways from all this:
      1. If you aren't getting the numerical results expected, you need to change your "calories in" figure to compensate for changing metabolic rate. You can also take steps to minimize this change (see below).
      2. Lifting weights while losing weight tends to be more helpful than aerobic exercise according to research, but regardless don't overdo the exercise. Focusing on diet has been shown to be more effective for weight loss than exercise. Some argue for minimal exercise while losing the weight initially, not for health reasons but for psychological ones. However it's still best to exercise to maintain your metabolic rate, as long as you're aware that you'll feel hungrier.
      3. Keeping the weight off is half the battle. Once you lose the weight, there may be a period where your body is more eager to put it back on. Make a goal to maintain your weight for at least a year, continuing your weigh-ins etc. Also increase your calorie intake very gradually. This has the added benefit of creating more sustainable habits. People who maintained their weight for a year had a much higher success rate in the long term.
      4. Make sure your diet is well balanced and healthy (fruit, veg, whole grains etc.), but add a little extra protein. This will help keep your metabolism up.
      5. Make sure you're not losing weight too fast. Slower is more sustainable. (Again, metabolism.)

Mr. Clifford you really are an inspiration!
I used your great videos and packet to self study for Micro in 2 weeks and I felt like I smashed that test.
I also started working out more and dieting due to my knowledge of opportunity cost a few weeks ago. It's a nice coincidence that you made this video just after I set a goal to loose 30lbs in 4 months. Good luck on your journey! I've noticed that telling friends/family really keeps me going - as you say it keeps people accountable!

Thank you. I think you are right . . I think 10 months is a more realistic goal

    • Adam Garner
Adam Garner 2 years ago +1

Keep S.M.A.R.T in mind. It's definitely achievable but is it realistic? If you took that same rate up to 12 months that'd be 120 pounds in a year! Weight loss shares a lot in common with diminishing marginal utility. As you get closer and closer to your goal it's gonna take more effort to maintain the rate you desire.
Regardless if you think you can do it - START NOW! :D (And if you think it's too ambitious well... START NOW!)
      Good luck
