The Broken Policing System | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix

  • Published on Sep 9, 2019
  • 2014 was a turning point in the national conversation around police violence after the killings of Michael Brown, Laquan Mcdonald, and Eric Garner. Five years later, Hasan examines the systems in place that protect and sometimes incentivize police misconduct in America.

Information provided on Hassan's show is not new. The facts and information are already out there as head lines, facts and figures. We do read and notice them but being the demure public that we are, we don't acknowledge them. Hassan and his team does a great job of presenting the content in a very interesting and comedic way. I always wondered why he never got into trouble. Truly speaking, once I started to watch and listen closely I realized he just shares the information in a "controversial way" when they are not something taken off of say FBI. Probably the reason why he didn't and won't get into trouble. This is not a criticism. I really enjoy his show!

People on both extremes of this issue just auto condemn the other side and assume they are guilty.
Minority gets abused or killed by corrupt cop... cop is defended - some know better while others don't.
On other side, cop gets severely injured or killed trying to "give the suspect the benefit of the doubt".
Or they get socially destroyed for pulling a gun on an unarmed suspect and it's even on film. But the part the news and public don't cover is that the suspect refused to cooperate, the officer was told that the suspect is probably armed, and the suspect (or person matching said description who isn't cooperating so that their innocence can be quickly determined) has a history of violence against officers.
And thus unnecessary violence happens to both sides - reinforcing and coloring people's perceptions. This continues the history of neither side in general wanting to trust the other and continues to see decent people on both sides caught in the cross fire and paying the price. The price caused by people on both sides who go to the extreme.

The professor in the interview claimed the US police was the best trained in the world! This is only a joke, Professor? On US average, the training there lasts 19 weeks. That is ridiculous. What do you want to learn in this short time? Come to Germany Professor. The cops in Germany have to undergo a thorough psychological, health and sports examination. They are tested in German and English and mathematics as well as general education. Only when they have passed all the tests are they allowed to go to the police school and are trained there for 3 years. Think again, professor!

There are a lot of conflicting things Hasan is saying, I understand because he wants to add comedy to a very serious issue but still conflicts his points. The stuff cops have to deal everyday to keep us all safe is something that you won't even believe happens. They train more in weapons because they need to be precise with it, they need weapons training so when they need to shoot a dog, it won't hit a kid. Also why cops are immune to being sued is because like Hasan said, americans like to sue everybody, there will be a lot of good cops that will be falsely sued if you let cops be sued. I think Cops becomes bad because of what they've been through being a cop. And cop jobs are not really on top of the list of many americans, if you take out their immunity I think we would have a bigger problem with crime because of lesser cops.

People forget that the police have no right to protect you. There have been a few court cases regarding this, including a Supreme Court case. The origin of police forces in the US begins with protecting slaveowner property - the slaves themselves, which meant hunting down those slaves if they were trying to gain autonomy and not be considered property and 3/5ths of a human being. Even now, property rights are imperative for cops, not human rights. It's basically a mirroring of this capitalist hellscape we live in, where corporations have more human rights than actual humans.

Wish Minhaj would've touched on that point

Hey Hasan u are doing a wonderful job by discussing issues which are important but somehow do not get attention they deserve. One such issue right now is the brutal way India has incarcerated an entire valley of kashmir with 8 million people. India is using it's naked military might and state machinery to suppress the basic human rights of Kashmiris. I request you in sprit of great empowering work you doing to do an episode on current crisis in kashmir. I understand stand it may cause you backlash from sizable Indian trolls, but I believe that the work you do is basically motivated by the passion of doing the right thing.

Arabs and people like Hasan were often considered "white" in America because of the Caucasian label (which included more than peoples of Europe). Sometimes mixed blacks tried to avoid segregation and legal racial oppression against blacks by claiming to be of Arab descent just to avoid being lumped into the black category. And it often worked. People like Hasan, or as the law said (Turks and Moors) could not legally be enslaved back in the 1700's, they could legally marry other whites, did not face segregation laws, did not have to go to separate schools, could receive more loans and could join many worker unions which were restricted to whites only.

the method used in this video is the same as it the KKK wrote the script. In the name of rights and fairness, he uses race, religion and gaslighting to label everyone who isn't him, or close to him. So, his solution is a national police force? Can anyone see the jive here? This whole thing is exchanging victim status for victim status with laugh tracts. This isn't about ending any corrupt regime at all. It's simply herding you in a direction it wants you to go, and, you'll go. I can read it in the comments. The same people who hate cops, wants big government, no perosnal ownership of firearms, somehow believes, a political body made up of corruptable, fallible people. This whole pony herding is using comedy, hate and anger to steer your mind. The left wants more government. In doing so, you need more cops. The right, is the other side of coin, freedom ! ! But make people live my way. This is a gaslighting video. Just enough factual information with out all the details.

Please watch some of the videos where suspects secretly grab a weapon and try to kill the police officer within a split second. There are situations where there is absolutely no indication of violence and then the suspect turns. There is no decent answer, they should ban guns in the USA though as a start.

USA Policing standards are set by the FBI who hasn't changed them to reflect our society. In some police depts. internal affairs do good work but in others, it's a failure. All police depts. should be required to be accredited but that also costs a lot of money and smaller depts. can't afford that.
Police academies run by state agencies should be shut down, instead, policing should be a 4 year college degree paid for by the student not the tax payer, this will insure that anyone who wants to be a cop is doing it from thier heart and for the right reasons. Once a person a special police degree they can apply to any police dept. they choose anywhere in the country and they will be very well trained from the beginning. Policing is a tough job and it's very hard to get good people to risk their lives if the benefits and protections just aren't there. High arrest numbers of people of color come from communities of color who are at the lowest end of the economic spectrum because of decades of neglect for all the reasons we already know and because of this neglect by our government, there is a great deal of ignorance and crime in the poorer communities of color. This is why the incarceration rate is so high for people of color, decades of neglect in education. NYC police dept. is so desperate for cops that they now hire people with criminal records because no one wants the job and then you end up with people who become cops for the wrong reasons and don't belong in the system. I know police officers in NYC and they all say in private that low-level crime is ignored so they can stay in service for more important crimes like shootings. They are taught to react very fast which has saved a great number of police officers but at the same time has led to bad shootings by police. It's a hard balance to teach a cop to be less fearful but have a fast tigger finger. I'm sure this is the way cops will begin to be taugh and it will lead to more police deaths which is also unacceptible. It's a terrible cycle that can be stopped but it requires guts from all sides to institute radical change. The justice system is broken, our society is broken, and we may have reached a point of no return.

Hassan minhaj I do love ur show but I have to tell you something I had issues w that fact u said it was easy to get info on doctors malpractice and I can tell you it's not my mom almost died countless times because of doctors screw up. I feel like people are always trying to use victims of medical malpractice use us for our agenda but not understanding or just doing lip service, if ur going to use us for stats be part of the movement of those victims because of doctors and nurses carelessness just don't use us for info. Show that you support those whose lives have been ruining for medical malpractice. Because when you just used us a stat it's like we're never exist. There are millions of stories of doctors destroying lives either by piercing the bowel or bladder leading to stepic which leads to death or doctors not checking for infections which can cause bone loss or death. This happen my mom and many other people. I just get tired of people using medical malpractice like it's fixed when the insurance company protect the doctor and nurses as they leave needles n bed perform surgery w/out having patient meds or not keeping the hospital clean. They get in trouble if they sexual assault their patient not for killing or making them handicap. I understand not that many people know about this like many didn't know about the cruise ships or police shootings. So I can understand being navie. I just want to inform you about that. I luv ur show just try not to make people who suffer fr malpractice a joke or just a stat that has been fix it's been 12 yrs since this has happened to my mom and nothing has change they're not looking to change there's no stem cell or human genome research unless you go out of u.s. or Europe. I hated when people use to up there pts or likes or favor fr our pain

    • Jenna K.
      Jenna K. 2 days ago

Because when you are preforming for an audience or are a tv personality you have to be animated when you talk.
Close your eyes and imagine for a second what it would look like and be like if Hassan stood in one spot, right in the middle of the stage for this whole segment. Not moving around at all...and also imagine that he doesnt use his whole body to speak.. so no arms, legs, head , or hand movements...
he would be extremely boring, unnatural, and unentertaining to watch.. and maybe even a little awkward.
      So that’s sort of why.
