My parents were so angry when they use to get too much ethanol in their new cars as it destroyed many parts. They ended up buying a gas tank and select fuel. I've seen ethanol destroy so many engines. Goooey. Sticky. Not good for parts. I use an addictive every other tank fill. And I watch what gas stations I fill up at.

Hi Scotty, I had this exact discussion with some folks recently. They were and I think still are convinced that the government is doing this to make them buy electric cars. I thought the jet plane contrails conspiracy was strange enough. Conspiracy theorists have invaded everything. I'm a chemist and before retiring owned an environmental testing lab testing among other things MTBE contamination. THANKS for this excellent and totally accurate explanation.

Scotty Kilmer I have a 2002 Infiniti QX4. It’s a great car and very reliable. I just came across a small problem. I believe my speedometer lights are slowly dying. My speedometer lights usually off and usually by night they are on. Sometimes not and I can’t see my speedometer and the other essential odometers. Also, same goes with my ac control lights. They were fine yesterday and now I can’t see them at all. They work well, I just can’t see them. Would you mind posting a video on how to replace the bulbs in those or how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate it

Scotty , it sounds that you have discovered at least 2 different gas stations that sell 17-30% ethanol in their gas. Do you know of a place on the internet that publishes gas stations that are abusers and dispense say 12 or 13%+ ethanol despite their stickers on the gas dispensers claiming a max of 10%?

I buy AM/PM Arco gas probably 20% of the time, should I be concerned?

    Thanks in advance for repsonding.

I remember when they used manganese as a lead replacement. Some knee jerk mechanics would pull a few spark plugs and see orange deposits that looked like red Georgia clay and they would assume it was rust and start taking the engine apart.
I worked for a Municipality that had over 1200 pieces of equipment. Some of the equipment sat idle for months so anytime it came in running bad I checked the fuel first and that was usually the problem.

Really like your videos lots of good info. And I get a kick out of you!

this reminds me of the story on my old truck, last year. 2000 Chevy (I know, I know) ZR-2 4x4, with 92,000 on it. I don't drive it much, so decided to just fill up with that 10% Ethanol for the next 5 fill ups due to the cost of fuel. The truck ran terrible. No power, no acceleration, just terrible. On a whim, I was thinking, what did I do to this old gal? And it came too me - Ethanol. Since I needed to fill up, I put in regular unleaded fuel. After the 2nd fill up, the old gal was back to normal. I learned my lesson and was lucky. Could have been water, could have been bad fuel, too much ethanol. What ever it was, now I make the sign of the cross, say 5 hail Mary's and double check what type of fuel before filling up. Yes, here in the mid-west, the farmers along with the Feds and oil companies have screwed over the American people.

Question I want answered is: How or why does Ethanol content creep up to high levels to begin with?

    • watcher206
      watcher206 18 days ago

Scotty has a video on the subject.. Look up "never go to this station."
But to sum it up, the fuel is legally only supposed to have up to 10% ethanol.. However most states seldom inspect the fuel and companies know this, so some companies tend to put more ethanol in the gasoline than they are supposed to; whenever by accedent or international.

  • Henry Stowe
    Henry Stowe 21 day ago

MTBE was an additive that oxygenated the fuel and fooled the oxygen sensor into believing the engine is running leaner than it is. It also dropped the available energy in gas. Same as ethanol. All of this is due to ever tightening government regulations

Benzene's Koc is almost an order of magnitude higher than MTBE's, which indicates that MTBE adsorbs to soil less than benzene.
In the 20s (I think) when they were first deciding what to use in gasoline, it was down to lead or ethanol. Lead likely won because it did the job better than ethanol, or maybe because someone wanted to destroy the empire for some reason or other. Unfortunately now, thanks to those 70 years, most of us all over the world have glutted on lead. I think some 3rd world places might still be using it.
MY MODEL T IS ALCOHOLIC TO SAY THE LEAST, but then it will run on diesel albeit with a smoke plume resembling that of a locomotive.

Nope, not true, adding ethanol was Al Gore's bright idea to save the planet by ruducing the amount of oil burned, but as it turns out it saves NOTHING because it takes so much oil to produce the ethanol it actually causes more oil to be burned and we get an inferior fuel.

I work at a non ethanol gas station. I've worked in the parts business and I'm a shade tree mechanic. Scotty is right. Ethanol can wreck havoc on a vehicle. Stabil makes an additive for ethanol gas that helps keep the erosion on certain parts from happening. Especially in small engines and 2 cycles. Gas only has a shelf life of about 30 days with no additive. The higher the ethanol content the less the shelf life. The pumps used for ethanol use different filters than non ethanol pumps. Yes, gas pumps have fuel filters to.
