The Dark Net isn't what you think. It's actually key to our privacy | Alex Winter | TEDxMidAtlantic

  • There is a hidden Internet, completely separate from the surface Web. Documentary filmmaker Alex Winter spent several years immersed in this fascinating world and talks about how the battle for your right to privacy is being waged in this dark corner of the Internet. You may have heard the "Dark Net" is a scary underworld filled with crime, but Alex's findings will surprise you.
Alex Winter entered show business as a child actor on Broadway and came to prominence in the wildly popular BILL AND TED franchise. Winter’s latest, award-winning documentary DEEP WEB, recently had a critically acclaimed world premiere at SXSW and a broadcast premiere in the U.S. on the Epix network, to be followed by a worldwide release on all platforms in September 2015.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The Silk Road is still a thing though. I don't understand why so many people write it off as being dead. It's actually confusing.

I'm still watching.. Silk road trials brought up... More info about it.. More info.. Still hasn't mentioned that the Law enforcement officials that infiltrated it were also tried for being bad actors and impersonated Albrecht in the process and their activities were hidden from the jury. There is little public about what they did specifically but unknown if entrapment or false evidence was used against Albrecht. Also, the "solicitation of murder" was not ever charged but was used by the judge during sentencing to trump up the length of sentence.

I think the feds and, most importantly, Big Pharma, didn't like Silk Road because it infringed on their dope-selling business. People aren't going to stop buying dope, EVER. The feds can implement their lame "drug wars" all they want. They might stop a few, but they are just creating an inroad for the cartels. I don't use dope, but if I did, I'd rather buy in the privacy of my own home than getting it out on the streets. Duh.

is this an invitation to the Dark Side? lord Vader? hopefully, because if every one is monitored and hacked on the entire Web, how is it possible to defend our privacy on TVclip and Facebook? im guessing the primary mean of facebook and youtube is to make you isolate your self physically, and thus you're unable to do anything neither physically nor virtually. i believe all we can do is turn off the artificial CPUs and turn on our natural ones.

It was and is a major crime to tamper with or breach the United States postal service. That law was initiated at the very beginning. Privacy at that time was the expected and respected. What has happened since then? Simply that the government does not care. Actually they benefit from a lack of privacy. I’ll bet if you hijack the postman today they wouldn’t even prosecute. Unless of course you did it in DC.

Yes and without DNS servers in those days you had to know someone to find a computer to connect to.
Do you remember the printed list of popular servers? I do. I subscribed to one and would have a few copies if I had not had a really bad house fire.

Now in order to get a gun, even if you pass the 10 day holding period for it, the FED govt can still tell the retail shop they are still looking into it and will let the retail shop know when he can release it...!! I think they are using a person's ip address to see if he is a Trump supporter so they can deny the gun...!! And now in Calif. there is a new law that activates this July which adds a $1 fee every time you buy ammo for your gun so another background check can be done...!! If they can get the guns, they will just limit the ammo...!!
Pretty soon everyone that owns a gun will be forced to the "darkweb" in order to get around all this control....!!

Extremely needed talk, yet totally wasted after all this time, just ask others of the real heroes of our times, Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and Snowden. The powers that be have not let up at all and any college student who did the same as the example he showed from Austin, TX will face the same fate.

Our world, and especially heavy use computer nations like the USA, are risking to end up as dictatorships like North Korea. We still live far better than in NK, but the US government already has similar powers as the North Korean, it can take all your possessions or even kill you and it ab-uses those powers rather often. Meanwhile its partner the media either ignores most of this abuse or justifies such abuse by slandering the abused people as potential criminals of any sort...most of you people will believe whatever the media and politicians tells them, yet pretend to be smart and skeptical of them. What many of you don't realize is that you're only and only skeptical of those you deem as opposites of you, your ideas and "values".
