I don't believe Lucius ever had "being bad" as his goal, or that he even cared about being loyal to Voldemort. He simply wanted to protect his family, and believed that aligning with Voldemort was the best means to that end.

In my opinion, Voldemort recruited Lucius for his wealth and influence. It's more about politics and money than skills and offense. Plus, his parents will disown him if he refuses.

I never really thought that Lucius knew what the diary was at all (and might have forgotten/not known it came from Voldemort at all). I thought when I first read it that he was just trying to get Dark Objects out of his house and he maybe thought it would be embarrassing if one was found with a family member of the Wizard who was looking for them. ::shrugs::

I'm pretty sure at the end the Order of the Phoenix lets Malfoy out because they figured if Voldemort has more plans to come back (like a secret daughter trying to mess the timeline or something) they would have less chances to succeed with Lucius in on them

If Voldemort never went after baby harry would harry still been able to match him. Voldemort would of remained in power, Potter probably would of stayed hidden, an Neville parents wouldn't of been tortured an Neville could of been his equal the whole time getting his own wand in year one not his father's which didn't help but still kept with the class, how do they grade can you be held back or summer school

Well technically he successfully killed buckbeak before time travel was used.

  • EiferBrennan

The only problem I have with this theory is Draco Malfoy would not have been at risk with the Basilisk, Not only was he pure-blood, he was also a Slytherin, and therefore had nothing to fear from Slytherin's monster.

  • David Meyer
David Meyer 21 day ago +3

2:20 - Technically he IS successful in getting Buckbeak _SENTENCED_ to death. Getting that sentence _carried out_ is another matter.

Ah, Lucius Abraxas Malfoy... My favorite character, so I simply must come to his defense. Lucius did not make the choice to become a Death Eater himself, he was pressured into it as a child, it was his father's decision. Lucius was still young and in his final years of Hogwarts when the Dark Lord rose to power, therefore he received the Dark Mark before he was of age. In pureblood circles, children are married shortly after graduating from school. Therefore, Lucius would only be 19-20 years old when Draco was born. The war lasted for eleven years, so Lucius did not have a choice when he became a Death Eater. Rant Over.

Is Malfoy the worst deatheater ever?
I know this is a late post, and that it is too long, so don’t bother to read it. I wanted to respond months ago, but I didn’t have my thoughts sorted out yet.
I think you are right about Lucious Malfoy and his family not being the most powerful magic users nor the most ruthless. I would like to point out the manner in which the Malfoy family actually is the most “important” Deatheater family.
Lord Voldemort, in books 5 - 7, is trying to fill the role of charismatic leader. He is building an army to take over the government and bring down Albus Dumbledore and the Hogwarts School. To do this he must recruit as many wizards and witches as possible. He will need people who will be able to fill the positions that come open in the government, fill the vacancies at the school, and who will gain and mold the willing compliance of the general populace.
Lord Voldemort will need to recruit a wide variety of individuals. Just like any other army, he will need cannon fodder as well as officers. As cannon fodder, he just needs powerful viciousness that he can some-what control. Trolls, werewolves, giants, dementors, and various criminals will make great cannon fodder.
To fill the position of his officers, and for people to place in his government and teaching positions, he needs intelligence. He cannot recruit these officers with the promise of “all the man-flesh they can eat.” Lord Voldemort must show people something that he has that they want. A snake-like face with no hair, red eyes, and slits for nostrils will not entice anyone.
The kind of wizards, that Lord Voldemort needs to recruit, must be intelligent and have a lust for power. This is where the Malfoy family come in. The Malfoy family are the example of pure-blood that also have the wealth, influence, beauty, and prestige that people find attractive. The fact that they have always been “faithful” to Lord Voldemort, implies that these virtues can be maintained and/or obtained by association with Lord Voldemort. The Malfoy family is Lord Voldemort’s advertisement campaign for his officers.
    Thanks.

I could be get in the movies and the books mixed up, but isn't the ministry doing more and more raids at the start of book 2 looking for dark objects, even though Lucius didn't know the diary was a horcrux he did know it was a powerful dark object, so he might have been trying to get rid of dark objects so it could not be found at his house and also as an extra benefit hurt the Weasley family which he despised. Lucius must have been one of the best Death Eaters before Voldemort's downfall because Voldemort entrusted him with a horcrux, Lucius did not think Voldemort would ever return or he wouldn't have got rid of the diary.

Actually, Lucius gave the scenario when he gave Ginny Riddle's diary. (Just sayin')

  • Mikel Garmendia

Keep in mind that Lucius was indeed one of the very few Death Eaters that had a child and so he would want to keep him away from the dangers he is in is just paternal logic. He believed in the cause of Voldemort's superficial plan: wizarding world's supremacy.
But he knew there was something else, so he would make whatever in his hands (the possible in his position) to put away his son from Voldemort

  • Guðbjörg Gísladóttir

Lucius Malfoy did exactly nothing unless he was ordered to do it. Why Harry´s second year? Because Voldemort told him to. And Voldemort could not do anything after loosing his body and his fight with Harry before the end of Harry´s first year. Lucius was trapped. He most likely wanted out of the Death Eater group altogether and could not find a way to so. Laying down his live ? No way. He wanted to be feared and powerful. Not wanting to risk his live for anybody or anything.
