Ant-Man Franchise More Successful Than Thor And Captain America

John answers viewers questions about the success of Marvel's Ant-Man franchise.
Anonymous Anonymous writes, Why are people ignoring the fact that the first two Ant-Man movies in total have made more money than first two Cap and Thor movies and have higher combined Rotten Tomatoes ratings than the first two Iron Man and Avengers. A third Ant-Man movie will help the MCU to change stake levels and have female heroes without further overcrowding the MCU. So why wouldn’t Disney (who make money on merchandise) want to make the movie?

Let's see if the 3rd movie makes it a higher franchise over cap & thor. It's about the trilogy in the end. But why would you think they're not making a third movie when Kevin feige says we do trilogies? Also they made a sequel to the first movie and made a hundred million dollars more and only spent a little bit more. Intern they made a profit so the think they're not doing a third movie is actually Ludacris it's making money.

  • Huntsman
    Huntsman 9 months ago

That excuse for Captain America is pretty lame. The DCEU in comparison didn't have anything that low in their establishing movies. Ant-Man 2 has beat everybody's expectations at Marvel, even though it was the 3rd Marvel movie released in a 6 month window. I mean seriously, it's almost beat Justice League on a budget over half the size.

  • Huntsman
    Huntsman 9 months ago +1

I would be shocked if they didn't do an Ant-Man 3. As long as they keep their budget in line (unlike Justice League and Solo), they will make a good profit. Also, AM3 also allows them to further Young Avenger Cassie, which I'm looking forward to in however many years it takes before that happens.

I’d like to see an Ant-Man 3 someday, just maybe not on the 2-3 year cycle they usually do.
and I wish there had been an Iron Man 4 sometime before _Infinity War,_ but after _Ultron,_ and an actual Captain America 3, since _Civil War_ was basically an Avengers movie...
and they’d better keep making Thor movies... _Ragnarok_ was basically Thor 1 for me, and it was too damn good not to make a sequel.

  • KayKo

They are making a 3rd one. They met their expectations. So they will control costs and meet them again. It will be more weird if it was the only one not to get a trilogy.
In addition if you made a movie for 360 million dollars and made a billion, and it took 6 years to make, wouldn't you keep that franchise going. Well I just took the high end estimates of the budget of both of them and combined them and what they grossed. Only if their merchandise sales were terrible would there even be a hesitation. If Justice league had those total numbers, they wouldn't be talking about getting rid of Henry Canvil, and Batfleck.
Also, people come out for trilogies. The last one gets the most hype. Thor, Iron Man, Captain...Why miss out on making money on ending the trilogy. Makes no sense if you are well into black.
You only saying this bc Thor 3, Black panther, spider man, infinity war, and guardians II surrounded it. All of those except guardians 2 had some special occasion that hyped them up. It's unfair to an Ant man franchise that as a whole way overperformed to think it will be bigger than SpiderMan's intro to the MCU, or the first African Superhero on screen.

I think Captain Marvel should have come out in Ant Man’s spot this summer and Ant Man should have come out in February leading up to Avengers in May 2019. If CM is as big as they’re making it sound, then I think it deserves a grander opening. And Ant Man leads directly into Avengers and appears to be playing huge part in that movie. With this said, 1) we have no idea how CM ties into Avengers 4 yet. 2) CM is also opening in a slot that Black Panther proves can work. 3) Ant Man 2 would not have been as successful if it were released in February, 4) It’s hard to question Feige’s plans at this point because he seems to have made all the right decisions for the MCU so far. Sorry Feige for questioning you. Banish me to the Quantum Realm.

Gio, just as you say context matters and you can spin the numbers for your narrative, you didn’t address the flip side of your perspective, so you sound just like you want you want to spin the numbers. You addressed the Captain America comparison to support your perspective and conveniently skipped over the Thor comparison. If you examine the box office of both Thor 1 and 2, even taking into account of post Avenger sequel bump, MCU juggernaut clout, etc, it’s clear they were not that strong performers, nor were they as well received as Cap or Iron Man series. You can very well have Thor be an Avegers team player, but Marvel gave him a third movie, fixed some things about Thor to make him more appealing, and it worked. While you can say his role and personality change in Infinity War and how Hulk comes back should have a good “setup” kind of movie, but it was NOT NEEDED. But they made it. Can you say Thor was not used in Avengers movies serving the overarching plot? Can you say Thor’s own plot was technically done after Dark World and Avengers and simply come back for next ensemble outing? Just like what you said about Ant Man? Now, there are nuances here about both of our perspectives, I’m just mentioning some point from a perspective opposite to yours. The bottom line is that in your head, no matter how much you enjoyed the Ant Man movies, you mentally relegate him to a second class bit player. I actually feel the same way, to a degree. I also felt that about Thor, until Ragnarok. I don’t care whether there’s Ant Man 3, I’m commenting on how your points are presented and how that frames my perception of you, especially given the lackluster effort you seemed to put into this topic.

Also, Ant-man (and Wasp) haven't appeared yet in an Avengers movie where both Thor and Cap benefited from for their sequels. In Avengers 4 Ant-man is presumably (from set photos) going to have a big role. If he is recieved as a highlight in the movie then Ant-man 3 will get another boost from that. It's highly likely that Ant-man 3 (or Ant-man & the Wasp: Something) is going to happen.

Disagree. Ant man 3 is a guarantee. It will most likely be a segue to the new avengers showcasing his daughters role and positioning on the new team after avengers 4. Probably around 2022 and will act as an origin story for stature so she doesn’t need to have a stand alone film as well as a farewell to supporting roles of the wasp and ant man who at this point take a back seat on the future events of the avengers......
stature will be on the new team so concluding the ant man trilogy while supporting the new cast makes the most sense and your underestimating the value of lower budget turnover and the charm of Paul Rudd’s acting style... not every film needs to rely on heavy cgi and big budgets so it helps to ground the mcu and maybe give some agents of shield or daredevil crossovers we have been begging for...

I really liked the Ant Man films, but I also think they had the benefit of the good grace of fans based on those other films. Disney could make another Ant Man and I'd applaud it, but if they didn't, I wouldn't be upset.
