How do you dispose of old filter, i'm scared i'll throw it away and this 100 degree heat will ignite it like a bomb there by causing the new Boston Inferno.

also a good tip is pour some hot water on the hoses so they expand so they come off easily

    • John Smithy
      John Smithy 3 months ago

That's a good idea. Mine were stuck on there good. I damaged the end of the hose getting it off but fortunately it was just long enough I could cut the damaged end off and still make it reach.

For extra safety after the pressure is relieved from the fuel lines, disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent sparks. As they say, sparks and gasoline don't mix unless you like to start a fire!

Are fuel filters standard for certain brands or model specific??

    • Redtooth 75
      Redtooth 75 7 months ago

It depends. Manufacturers usually try to use as many common parts as possible to reduce costs. It is common for manufacturers to use the same filter with all of their models, but there can be exceptions.

Hey Chris. I’ve a question. Would a dirty/clogged fuel filter weaken the effectiveness of seafoam/system cleaner etc?

    • ChrisFix
      ChrisFix  9 months ago

It would not but it could cause it to clog up more.

Why remove the fuse/relay surely disconnection of the battery is enough

    • Cameron Shepherd
      Cameron Shepherd 8 months ago

Not necessarily. Disconnecting the battery erases anything the car's computer has learned. Ex, shifting time for automatic transmissions.

I change all my filters annually or every 10-15k miles whichever comes first. 30k-50k change interval might work in the US but if you were to do that in Europe or more specifically - Eastern Europe you'd be changing injectors together with the filter. Fuel quality here is crap and often diluted with whatever fluid they had handy. Also there's another type of fuel filters - the paper element inside a plastic box eg Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo. I guess that's straight forward enough not to require a video. :)

Can a filter make the car seem like it's in limp mode?

    • Redtooth 75
      Redtooth 75 7 months ago

It can. If the filter is clogged it can prevent enough fuel from reaching the engine. This would cause a loss of power.

    • Redtooth 75
      Redtooth 75 7 months ago

You can use an aftermarket filter, or a different stock one. You might have to alter the fuel line to get your new filter to attach to the lines.

Isn't it bad for the fuel injectors to crank the engine with the fuel pump fuse removed? That's how I did it for my truck but someone told me I should've just taken the gas cap off to relieve fuel pressure because it's bad for the injectors to start the car with no fuel pump

Thanks so much for this. First time I've had to remove a fuel filter today and I think the original had been left on the car it's whole life! (19 years). Absolute nightmare I was about to give up on until I found this vid and you mentioned the hook/toothpick idea. After a bit of brute force and jiggery pokery - she's off and the new one's in! Also renewed the screws and nuts holding it on (thanks to my mate with a jar of PC spares) as the originals were so ancient. The tool we used wasn't perfect and we slightly damaged the end of the fuel hoses getting them off, but with the new retaining things on nice and tight it doesn't seem to have had any ill effects. I'm gonna invest in a hook tool for this purpose now! Thanks again!

Chris, please help me brother. I have a 2004 Grand Prix. Trying to change my fuel regulator. But I can't find it. I was told by AutoZone that it's in the fuel filter. Someone told me it may be in the fuel pump. The car is hard to start, but once it does, it runs perfect. Why does some fuel filters have two outlets? Thanks again Chris. Great videos

Soo not doing the other styles lol
