How the Chicago Bulls self-destructed after Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson left | Collapse

  • Published on Apr 18, 2019
  • When the game's best player and best coach leave you in the same offseason, the only way to go is down. Fast.
In 1998, the Chicago Bulls won yet another championship: an incredible SECOND three-peat for the team built by Jerry Krause, coached by Phil Jackson, and led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. But for all their glory, the team was in disarray. When the deeply disgruntled Jackson left town, Jordan followed him, and Krause was left to pick up the pieces.
... and by "pick up the pieces," we mean swiftly hurl all the pieces into the abyss and start rebuilding from scratch. But rebuilding, it turns out, isn't always easy.
This is the story of how the Bulls followed one of the NBA's most impressive peaks with a valley just as impressive in its steepness and depth. This is the rapid collapse of one of history's greatest teams.

As a Bulls fan, one of the teams biggest and most recurring problems is giving up too easily. In the 2014-15 season, they had a pretty stellar lineup (including a mostly healthy D. Rose) and seemed poised to make it to the finals before LeBron and the Cavs got in their way. Then of course, Tom Thibodeau was let go, and the Bulls ultimately missed the playoffs the next year. The team started the 2016-17 year with Jimmy Butler still dominating, and even Dwayne Wade playing well in spite of his age, and they returned to the postseason, despite losing in six to the Celtics. Most teams would've seen this as a positive step and tried to build off it; GarPax, however, decided to completely give up, nuke the team, and start over from scratch, which brings us to the frustrating last couple seasons we've had, and the couple more that are almost a certainty. Yeah the 2019 draft went surprisingly well for the team (especially after how devastated everyone was at landing only the seventh spot), but that seventh title we could've--and should've--won over the last decade is still years away.

Remember Krause didn’t recruit Jordan. Ppl believe Jerry was this genius but don’t forget they had Jordan. Trust if Jordan wasn’t on that bulls they won’t win one championship.

@James Yeah, I get it, but seems like the front office and the players were ALWAYS clashing. It's good they won titles, but for about 9-10 seasons, the office didn't do much since Jordan left, heck even during the Bulls run, I don't think they developed anyone.

After MJ and Company won a 2nd 3-peat, Reinsdorf and Krause were still pushing those guys out the doors. In early 2010s, Tom Thibodeau got fired for lack of loyalty to the bulls organization, though thibodeau should've been a little more sensitive to the executives. The Bulls hired Fred Hoiberg, and that experiment didn't work either. Then they traded away Jimmy Butler to the T'wolves, another boneheaded move by the bulls. And whose behind some of the demise of this franchise, non other than owner Jerry Reinsdorf

Great video and so informative of how it all played out! I think the Bulls could've had some really good years again had D Rose's knee injuries not come along. Those were devastating to them and one of basketball's purest scorers the game has ever seen. And speaking of MJ's shot to win the title in Utah, I look forward to Kawhi creating that kind of magic tonight in Oracle. He'll have his legs back under him and I also think Lowry and Danny Green have big nights from 3. Look for the Raps to hit their own 20 3's tonight. Lets go RAPTORS!!!

Krause did what any Exec should do. Rebuild before the team gets too old. He made some quality picks, they just peaked in other places. I know Jordan worshipers like to believe he could've played and won for another 9 years, but that just isn't how it works. Krouse did the right thing. Brand and Artest were great picks. Is it his fault Williams and Fizer got hurt? They were rebuilding a young talented team, the plans just got rushed.

all the people who said the bulls were nothing without MJ are now rethinking this all. It all went downhill when Phil left and MJ said he would not play for any other coach yet Lebron is seen as a villain for not wanting to play for other coaches. And the bulls won 55 games after MJ retired in 94 and were a blown call away from the ecf. The entire team was gone after Phil left and then MJ left.

The reason for collapse of the Bulls is Reinsdorf. He is cheap and greedy. he wont pay his players, they develop, become free agents and lets them leave or trades them. Jordon was only paid $10m his last year. Scottie Jackson Rodman and Jordan had plenty more in the tank. Reinsdorf didn't want to pay anyone and used the rebuild excuse like he does every 3 years. Don't believe? Look at what he does with the white sox. Traded Chris Sale for a 250 hitter. Chris didn't want to be in Chicago because he saw the lack of gaining talent. Dont worry the Sox have alot of young talent hes too cheap to pay for pitcing. they will be next to last by end of season. next year Jose' McCann Anderson Garcia Alonzo Year after Moncada and Eloy will follows. Jerry sucks and always will.

The coach is winning championships, but owners and upper management get in their feelings because the attention isn't centered around them, and chase a good coach away. And neither one of these teams has won championship since then?
