How the Chicago Bulls self-destructed after Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson left | Collapse

  • Published on Apr 18, 2019
  • When the game's best player and best coach leave you in the same offseason, the only way to go is down. Fast.
In 1998, the Chicago Bulls won yet another championship: an incredible SECOND three-peat for the team built by Jerry Krause, coached by Phil Jackson, and led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. But for all their glory, the team was in disarray. When the deeply disgruntled Jackson left town, Jordan followed him, and Krause was left to pick up the pieces.
... and by "pick up the pieces," we mean swiftly hurl all the pieces into the abyss and start rebuilding from scratch. But rebuilding, it turns out, isn't always easy.
This is the story of how the Bulls followed one of the NBA's most impressive peaks with a valley just as impressive in its steepness and depth. This is the rapid collapse of one of history's greatest teams.

Krause just couldn't get over his delusional ego. Yes he deserves credit for contract offers, signing free agents, and making the necessary trades; that was his job. So he is a part of why the Bulls were so successful. But it was obvious that Jordan and the team were the reason why the Bulls won 6 championships.
Being born and raised in Chicago, it was awesome. We were on top of the world. But one man's ego ruined it all. And still being a Bulls fan, with the Reinsdorf family owning the team, Gar/Pax in the front office, I don't see the Bulls winning another Championship in my life. It's turned into, "just fill the seats and make money"

I couldnt even bring myself to watche the Bulls for 2 straight years after this... and this was a Team that I absolutely WORSHIPPED growing up. I just couldnt do it.
    It hurt too much.
Even though all of us in Chicago knew what was coming, AND even though we had been through an MJ Retirement before, it was still like watching someone walk up to the Statue of David and take a sledgehammer to it!
We had to begrudgingly give Jerry Krause the "rescpect" that was due him, but we also hated him... and I do mean HATED HIM. He didn't just want some of the credit for the 2 separate Three-peats, he wanted ALL OF THE CREDIT.
That quote, the one about "Players don't win Championships, Organizations win Championships", oh wow, that threw the entire city into an uproar for an entire summer. This guy couldnt even say the one thing that everyone already knew...
Jordan and Pippen made Jerry Krause look like a genius. And Krause had nothing to do with Drafying MJ!!!!
Anyway, Bulls fans the world over had to just sit there and watch as the Greatest NBA Team ever assembled, and the LITERAL GOD OF BASKETBALL, were ripped from our collective hands!
I want you to try to imagine this:
Look at the Bulls 1998 Championship Roster...
Now, look at the team of 1999-2000.
Try to tell me how YOU would feel if that had just happened to your favorite team, right after they had won their 6th Championship in 8 years!
I mean, at that time period, it's not like Chicago Sports fans had a lot to be excited about... none of the other teams were winning Championships!
Seriously, look at those 2 different rosters and then tell me how you could possibly stomach watching the 1999 team?!?!?
It was unbearable. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried when I knew that MJ was gone from the Bulls, this time forever.
This is a Collapse unlike any other. It certainly didn't have to happen that way.
With all of these years to look back on it with a little more perspective, ya know what...

The Bulls and MJ and Scottie should have been given the opportunity to play together until the wheels fell off! They should have been given the respect to continue playing together until someone finally beat them, or until THEY THEMSELVES decided it was time to end it.
    Such a damn shame.

Phil, MJ and the rest of the team made Krause's decisions work, not the other way around. He had nothing to do with their success, but he wanted all the credit. And that's what blew up the team.
