  • Bill Hader and John Mulaney try to talk about HBO's Barry. Hader made the switch from being a master of impressions on SNL to creating, directing, and starring as a burned out assassin trying to break into the LA theater scene in HBO’s Barry. How did he pull it off?

Now entering its second season, Barry is only getting darker, funnier, and more addictive-and it’s being hailed as one of the most refreshing shows on television. The show received 13 Emmy nominations, including Best Actor (for which he won), Best Director and Best Writing for Hader himself-along with Best Series. Join us as Hader and fellow SNL alum John Mulaney discuss the trajectory of his career leading up to the show, the new season, and much more. Recorded May 12, 2019 at 92nd Street Y.

31:56 is that exact moment where Bill is trying to compose himself after realising just how many people are there. It's such a relatable thing and I appreciate him being so open about his anxiety with performing. Improv is a terrifying concept to me and it's incredible that people who suffer with anxiety can push through that. Both of them are amazing.

One of the things I learned from this is someone needs to replace Lorne Michaels so SNL can be funny.

Apart from a few TVclip clips of him doing doing impressions, I wasn't really aware who Bill Hader was until 'Barry' (Saturday Night Live is not shown in the UK) but I'm now addicted and have fallen down into a Hader rabbit hole and I'm quite happy with that.

1:14:40 - that's an excellent point. When I'm casting for things, I look for this too. When you go to actors showcases, you can totally tell when actors are present with their scene partners vs when they are just standing around waiting to deliver their next line. That's how you know who is going to make a scene and who is going to hog the spotlight.
