Everything around you can become a computer | Ivan Poupyrev

  • Published on May 8, 2019
  • Designer Ivan Poupyrev wants to integrate technology into everyday objects to make them more useful and fun -- like a jacket you can use to answer phone calls or a houseplant you can play like a keyboard. In a talk and tech demo, he lays out his vision for a physical world that's more deeply connected to the internet and shows how, with a little collaboration, we can get there. Unveiled in this talk: Poupyrev announces that his newest device, Jacquard, is now publicly available for all designers to use.

Doesn't like computers at the table, so sticks computers in everything. Has spent 20 years working on a product that's supposed to be a solution but it's still searching for the problem. Felt very out of touch.

It's a great idea but it needs to be an integrated product not an external product.. just like electricity in a house.
I don't need to get a generator every time I need electricity. It's ambiguous and all that's needed is a flip of a switch.

If I want to make a phone call, I’ll just push call on my phone. MUCH EASIER
Otherwise, we must spend time integrating our tech into garments just to achieve the same thing our phones can already do.

But things aren’t designed to be good interfaces...they were designed for much different uses.
Keyboards, mice, touchscreens were all designed to be interfaces. Is it a coincidence they work the best?
Could a t-shirt be a good input device? But ask yourself why??

This is quite inspiring. People who are putting negative comments need to know that all major systems are made fault tolerant and you cannot keep yourself from exploring new ideas because they sound too wild for your imagination.

wearable interface won't have it's appeal. People's love for cellphone and computers is based on the balance the world of reality and cyper space which was confined within BOXES. the dark side of technology is it's deprivation of people's freedom in the world of reality despite more freedom in cyper space.

Computer interfaces will not be perfected until the computer can see, hear, evaluate, and take action just like humans. When I don’t need to touch my arm, all I need to do is look or point or speak, when I interact with computers the same way I interact with humans, then computer interfaces will be perfected.

Huh, interactive sculptures would be interesting, I'm not a fan of art being behind a rope, how bout a sculpture, like a figure, you can interact with, or paintings, maybe a portrait that reacts to your emotions, those plants reactions were interesting, what's this technology called?

  • BlackandWhite2

This technology is amazing. But before it'll become a usual thing in our lives we have to solve the one significant problem - how to make people owners of their lives? Why should I buy a phone which not becomes my own property - it still transmits a lot of my information to google and other tech giants. I want to control things I buy - that's how it should to be. Someone will say - what about terrorism? I don't know. And while there is no solution such kind of technologies remains dangerous.

    • Kevin Bell
      Kevin Bell 4 months ago

One of the important things when you trying to control your own devices is that the knowledge of how to do those things, that’s is the cost of full controlling to your device. Secondly, sacrificing your privacy as the payment of the “free” services is what you have to do, there are no other choice even you buy the premium or anything from the service providers. Fortunately there are lots of open softwares, browser plugins, still give us some more alternative options, and also, they need time to learn.
