The Real Reason Disney Re-Hired James Gunn For GOTG 3

  • Published on Mar 19, 2019
  • The Avengers aren't the only ones making a huge comeback this year. Disney and Marvel Studios have made the unexpected decision to re-hire James Gunn to finish what he started with the Guardians of the Galaxy series. What happened in the months since Gunn's firing to make this unlikely triumph possible?
To call James Gunn's firing in July 2018 "unexpected" would be a bit of an understatement. Under Gunn's direction, the Guardians came out of nowhere to become one of the most successful series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe... pretty impressive for a property that was all but unknown before 2014.
On top of the money the movies brought in, they also earned rave reviews, making talking trees and trash pandas beloved household names for families across the world.
But as Gunn's sudden firing seemed to demonstrate, all of that success meant nothing in the face of corporate mandate.
The third Guardians movie was originally set to begin filming in fall 2018, but was shut down indefinitely after the controversial decision was made to fire Gunn for provocative past tweets.
A few days after Disney's decision was made public, the main cast of the franchise rebuked the company with an extraordinary open letter calling for Gunn to be reinstated. The remarkable show of support left many hoping that the situation could be turned around. But publicly, the company was unswayed, and it soon looked like Disney would rather scuttle Volume 3 in its entirety than bring Gunn back.
Watch to learn more about the real reason Disney re-hired James Gunn for GOTG 3!

I think there was a whole lot more to it than a couple of tweets it's interesting that they can fire James Gunn for his tweets but yet Brie Larson gets nothing for all of the hate and racism that she's openly come out with and the nasty things that she has said and tweeted

Even though Disney f*cked up, it's good that they went back and fixed this mistake. Many companies would be too proudful and just stick with their decision, so we shouldn't hate on Disney now for making the right call. Hopefully more entertainment companies will listen to their fans instead of random general public

Please, Gunn's calmness didn't influenced anything. I'm pretty sure it was Disney that told Gunn to stay quiet so that things quiet down and people forget about it and then they'll re-hire him. They planned this all along and never had the real intention of firing him permanently.

I call bull that Disney was planning on rehiring him for months. Fall of last year, Bob Iger (CEO of Disney) did an interview with the Hollywood Reporter where he specifically said he didn't regret firing James Gunn. This was months after the controversy, so he should have heard all the criticism by then. This also does not fit the "months ago" story as at most, they'd have 1-2 months at most to change Bob's mind. Let's also point out what happened just before Gunn's rehiring. Gunn was hired in December to direct the Suicide Squad film. Before he was just writing. Then news came out in February that both Will Smith and Margot Robbie were fired at DC and that the film would be a reboot. Also, after the failure of Justice League, DC said they were going to restructure their films, giving their universe a soft reboot. Now you're free to do with this information what you will, but it seems like too much of a coincidence that Disney rehired Gunn after all this news came out.
If you want to know my theory, I believe that DC was hoping that Gunn would guide them through their reboot. By how much, I'm not sure, but they seem to be giving him a lot of creative control. I think they were slowly trying to make him their Kevin Feige or some similar position. Disney finally realized this and didn't want to give anymore power to their competition, so they rehired Gunn to prevent this. But since Gunn already signed a contract with DC, Disney has no choice but to wait for him to finish Suicide Squad. Again, this is just a theory. I have no proof but connecting the dots, this seems very possible. At the very least, all this news about Suicide Squad and the excitement people were having for it definitely made Disney realize how much money they would lose by keeping Gunn fired. There's no doubt in my mind that it was all these reports that changed Disney's mind, not their "generous" heart and forgiveness. Don't be fooled.

James Gunn is one of the key people in the entirety of the MCU. The Russo Bros and Kevin Feige are the tippy top but James has cemented himself as basically the one who is the all-father for the cosmic side of the MCU. Setting up the upcoming Eternals movie, the Adam Warlock addition, obviously GotG3, and much more. He basically set up Captain Marvel too. So when they fired him it was extremely bad for the future of the MCU and I was incredibly scared that it would start to falter, especially after the endstone that is Endgame. Thankfully Dianey grew a brain and a heart and re-hired him back, hopefully guaranteeing the future of the MCU for a much longer.

The Tweets were not "controversial", they were OPENLY PEDOPHILE !!!
We are back to the problem with genius vs. psychopathy, as with the posthumous scandal involving Michael Jackson.
Personally, I really enjoyed the Guardians movies, but I am not going place my enjoyment over the problems caused by high-profile psychopaths - especially when the pardon only applies to promoters of leftist ideology.
There's not a sliver of evidence that Trump was ever racist or misogynist, but a private comment from 2006 is still quoted as justification for unending hatred against him, although all he said is that adult women LET HIM touch their genitalia, implying CONSENT.
But Gunn gets away with THOUSANDS of tweets implying his sexual preference for CHILDREN, which is not just immoral, but criminal!
This moral relativism is totally messed up.

The tweets may have been disgusting, but you still can't accuse someone of being a pedophile without any evidence to back it up. Sure, he said some things, but saying is not the same as doing.
If we focus on jokes instead of actual crimes, and try to destroy entire careers based on things said in the past, then what separates us from the crazed witch-hunting mobs of old?
