Why Calzones Deserve More Love | Food Skills

  • Published on Dec 18, 2017
  • Calzones are a staple of the pizza-parlor menu, but too often the dish doesn't get the respect it deserves. That's too bad, because the calzone is a near-perfect food: According to Mathieu Palombino-the owner of Motorino Pizzeria in NYC-these wood-fired pizza pockets allow ingredients to stay ultra-moist and flavorful while cooking inside the oven. Stuffed with a mixture of sweet and spicy sausage, and held together by globs of melted Pecorino Romano cheese, Motorino's calzone is a worthy alternative to a classic pie.

Why aren't calzones as popular as pizza? Uh...because they're not pizza. Pizza is our childhood. Pizza is our fondest memories. Pizza is our college nights staying up studying. Pizza is buttery crust LOADED with meat, cheese, and everything else. And you can see it all. It's not hidden like the calzone. The calzone may be portable, but pizza is the greatest dish ever created.

this title was misleading. it should have been "this calzone will change how you think of calzones" or something like that. even though it sounds gross to me, it seems like it could convert some haters. i prefer my calzones filled with cheese and veggies and those calzones deserve more love too.

Italian-Americans: *But he speaks with an accent! He's not even American for fucks sake!*
-No, but he's European and probably understands Italian culture better than any American.
-Gettafakkaareheeeee! We only pretend we respect European Italians until we actually have to do it but then it's easier to just be American.
    -You're full of shit.

from my unfortunate experience sadly i wouldn't call this a calzone. i once was in an Italian restaurant and ordered a stromboli expecting a rolled stromboli, i was given a calzone with different cheese and was notified they are the same but use different cheese.. and all other calzones i've seen are just cheese inside dough with marinara on the side. i've had to steer clear of ever considering ordering one because of how my state treats them. cheese pockets, so disgusting. I would love to go to new york for this.

I usually dont like calozone, because most places prepare it like a pizza, that is folded in half. out comes a undercooked mess with wet filling, burnt top and it still tastes like a regular pizza, because it is a very bad regular pizza.
This on the other hand is calzone done the way it's meant to be! Looks amazing!
