Pixel 2 is EXTREMELY impressive. iPhone was trash (still think that iPhones look the best though) but the pixel 2 BLEW the iPhone out of the water.
Itโ€™s pretty ironic that Apple products come equipped with a bunch of editing software. Itโ€™s like they know youโ€™re gunna need it if you buy their phones also. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Ashame instead of sticking with that and making improvements they listened to everybody who wasn't going to buy their phone. Then the subsequent M9 had its own set of issues. But again have they stuck with it they would have been at the forefront AGAIN.
    Truly a shame.

As a photo hobbyist, I actually *preferred the Google Pixel over the Hassblad* in two of the pictures. Now let me explain how that can be and why I still bought a new lens for my mirrorless camera yesterday, for the same price as a new smartphone.
The reason is that the smartphone companies are quite aggressive on automatic color editing of the pictures: The phone guesses what type of picture it is, considers the color space in the picture and makes adjustments towards what humans generally find more attractive: Vibrant and warm colors, with some exceptions.
This means that the JPEG straight out of camera the phone will sometimes look better, and it's easier and quicker to share the photo.
Reasons why I still bought a new lens for my mirrorless camera just yesterday?
1: Picture reliability: Phones often guess wrong, or guess something really stupid, resulting in an unusable photo with no other workaround than trying again and praying to the AI gods.
2: System reliability: High end smartphones are inherently quite fragile compared to cameras, due to thinness and having a full side covered in glass. The phone lens is prone to smudge, wear and mechanical damage over time due to being carried unprotected in pocket and used for all kinds of other stuff. The camera app and interference from other apps and excessive chains of software updates is less of a problem, but I'm sure we've all experienced the camera app randomly shutting down or refusing to open.
3: Accessories: Flashes, tripods, audio recorders, filters (UV, ND, gradient...), remote shutter releases... For most any randomly picked camera compared to any randomly picked flagship phone, more and higher quality accessories are available.
4: Glass: Optical zoom, and an interchangeable selection of lenses with various fields of view, gives obvious advantages.
5: Manual control: The camera and lens has physical dials to directly and quickly control all the elements of the picture, letting me have exactly the compression/distortion, depth of field, motion blur and grain. This means it is my picture, looking exactly how I want it to. There are camera apps that allow some level of manual control, but it's quite limited and super inconvenient hidden under menus compared to turning an ergonomic dial that is always available. This is the biggest factor for me, as it changes photography from simply recording a view to creating a look. It's the difference between taking the bus or driving a motorcycle. The bus is cheaper and the driver knows the way, you just have to go on and get off at one of the preselected stations, which usually are close to something useful. A motorcycle takes a lot more time to maintain and store, and you have to drive it yourself, but you can drive it exactly the route you want and sometimes take a creative detour to something you've never seen before, just for the experience and exploration itself.
6: And lastly, yes the image quality is better. Not so visible on a tiny mobile screen, but for print or displaying on a large screen, the difference is massive. If the colors aren't as interesting straight out of camera, a quick edit (including preset filters) can catch up on that in the direction you want, and a thorough edit can create magic. Phones have made great strides to catch up, but there is still a long way up and each step is becoming more difficult as the easy steps have been made first, leaving the tougher and less impactful challenges, such as diffraction and fast moving subjects, still ahead.

What's interesting is that a lot of third-party developers are utilizing this dual-aperture technology a lot better than the native apps do. For iPhone X for instance there's an app called "Focos" which gives you an absolute crapload more control over how the focus works, what the bokeh looks like, how far it covers - you can even edit the depth data. There's a bunch of apps like this which really add a lot to the process.
