Do video games make you a more violent and aggressive person? That is the question we are covering today. We touched on this topic before in our episode "Does Fortnite Make You Violent?" but I think, in the wake of current happenings, it deserves a deeper look. This is a tricky and very personal topic for myself and many others, so I am going to do my best to do my due diligence. Today we attempt to answer the long argued question, "Do Video Games Make You Violent?"

Man, I've been loving the new kinds of videos you've been putting out, Mat and the Theorist team!
Thanks for doing this research and making this video. The thought you put into writing and discovering all this information shows, and I'm incredibly proud of the work you've done and continue to do. I'm super familiar with all these arguments and issues going into the world of journalism myself, but it just makes me want to get there even faster - to try and do this kind of ethical research and reporting. It's not easy to put aside your personal perspective and see what you find, but you did, and I thank you on behalf of those of us who aspire to do that too. :D

People just don't know Cause and Effect nowadays. Yes, Video games do cause Violence to some degree. Because Things affect each other. Another thing to quote the Game Theorists when you want to say something wrong... Great...

Video games only make you violent if your mental or just don't know the difference between right and wrong. Rarely are you going to get a non aggressive person that play violent video games to go out and shoot up people for no reason.

It's not complicated. The answer is no. It's people with mental health problems that would be violent anyway without games.

Why aren’t people asking why there are so many violent video games in the first place? Because they wouldn’t be there in the first place if people weren’t attracted to guns

I tried to back this up by saying the 2 most popular games of all time are Tetris, and Minecraft. But why the 2. Because the 3rd is Gta V, which is very violent.

Does nothing go in other peoples head that says, what happened in their life to cause this actions?
Nah just turn the table and blame other things rather than blaming either things happening at home or things at school.
Such as crime at home like abuse or bullying at school. These things may cause violent actions.

I think it's also important to differentiate between video games not really being the cause, but instead maybe just a trigger.
I really love video games, especially Overwatch, and i'm not at all a violent person xD Yet, there are days when everything just goes horribly wrong and then i game and it either cheers me up or i just get extremely upset, tilted, salty, even slightly aggressive, but that's not from the game itself. Often times it's because I've had a rough day at school, or my mom walks in and starts a convo with me just as i get into a comp match... or I'm just stressed in general.
But also note that *anything can be a trigger* .
And being completely honest, the gaming community units some of the sweetest and most peaceful people out there.

Playing CoD helped your aim huh? How? Was it in VR form? Because whether you play with a keyboard/mouse or controller, none of that is gonna help your aim at all outside of it. You aren't doing the same moment at all when playing the game vs holding/firing/aiming in real life. I have great muscle memory with a mouse when aiming but I have hunted with friends and it does NOT translate lol.
I have also not been desensitized. I thought games like this would. But I turn away when I see gore or someone gets into an accident in real life. So doubt that. I know..we are all different.

The country with the highest number of guns per capita is also the country with the highest number of gun related incidents per capita.

But yeah I'm sure that's just a coincidence. It must be the videogames.

My case: I played DOOM 2016 when i was 11 years old, and played Rainbow six siege, Mortal combat 11 when i was 14 after.., which to me is weird becuz i wasen't violent at a high level.
so in my opinion, it also depends on how the child or young one was influenced by the parents to have a moral and discipline to counter that influence a violent video game gives (i also think age matters). If the child has a low morality, he might just be heavily influenced by the violent game and there for may have some violent intentions.
Dont get me right, don't get me wrong, i am only 14 years old and im still dumb as balls.

  • Prower Gaming
    Prower Gaming 4 days ago

I honestly don't think video games make us more violent. People who play violent games might find the genre cool. They think it's cool but they don't get violent bc of it. I think it's just whether people know the laws and know how to differentiate right from wrong.

I am so glad that this video exists. We all needed to hear this. I was worried, too...I was scared I would hear an answer I didn't want to hear. And though there is some correlation, I'm so glad you did the research that no one else wanted to do and put all the facts out straight for us. So thank you so much, Mat.
P.S. Have you noticed how other videos usually have comments about 5 or less lines long, while we left-brained Theorists write carefully worded, detailed and specific comments?
