  • This week, a new year, a new government - what do we make of it so far? Where is Boris Johnson heading? Will this feel like a revolution or nothing of the sort?
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Joining Gary to discuss that is Robert Colvile, Director of the Centre for Policy Studies, who helped write the Tory manifesto for the last general election and Rachel Sylvester, Times columnist and distinguished political commentator.

Is it me, or does listening to Robert Colvile cause headaches?
Longs of "bla" but no real answers to what are very crucial, interesting AND YET, still, unanswered questions.

frankly i am secondly fearful of many of the news journalists too!
that seem to decieve and blindly support this government, without applying the usual intelligence.
i am sad to see too many people supporting such destructive and un-regenerative ideas for politics

Ten minutes in, possibly the worst two to appear on this programme ... how do two cheerleaders for Cummings help provide something of value in answering questions .... the young guy is just trying to win brownie points with the powers that be at No 10 to be let back in ... everything interesting and fascinating in terms of debate but no answers ... waffle ... okay nothing to see here, I'm not wasting time with these two

"Please don't give anyone I disagree with any airtime" is, of course, what you really meant. Channel 4 receives public funds and is meant to be impartial. If you anti-British types want a Safe Space Channel, where men can be women, all cultures are equal, all immigration into the West is universally beneficial, and no hate-facts are ever allowed to be mentioned, then fund it yourselves. (Please note that we wouldn't try to get it banned, in the way that you would a Patriot Channel. We know your ideas can be easily knocked down without the need for censorship.)

"3-4% UK economic growth rates".....how I long for those days.....borrowing at low interest rates is all very well (provided the money is used to sensibly to 'level up' infrastructure spending across the UK, especially outside London and the South East).....however, boosting UK productivity growth is the big issue....if taking back control can address this issue, then it will have been worth all the rancour/hysteria in my humble opinion. Keep on going for it, PM Boris! You too, Dominic Cummings. The two of you make a good double duo....... but we all know who really calls the shots......and that is as it should be.

Isny it funny how nobody cares that IRAN shot down that Ukrainian plane on purpose just to show the west that they can and to prove to themselves that the EU will do nothing as usual. This is exactly how ww2 started. Iran just keeps pushing the boundaries and since nobody pushes back they belive they can get away with anything and that emboldens them. Even trump is a failure and has backed down. The US should nuke iran. If they want nukes that bad then we need to stop them now before it's too late. Why are we letting a nation that funds terrorism like Hezbollah get more and more powerful and let them take over the middle east by terror. It's a huge mistake and the linger we wait the worse it will br later. Canada doesnt even care that almost 70 of their citizens were murdered and they do nothing. Pathetic. Why is everyone soo afraid of iran. Nobody needs their oil, and we dont want them to become wealthy since they send soo much money to terrorists. all of them are fair targets since they are all terrorists. We should kill them all. The EU thinks that freedom is free because they havent had to fight for it for soo long. Say goodbye to democracy in the EU. Their people will soon sttafg to overthrow them and russia and turkey will swoop in. Turkey should be kicked out of NATO. They have the most journalists in prisons more than any nation on earth. Why doesnt anyone actually are about human rights. The EU is just talk, the US is the only one that actually cares even though they blame us for everything. Obviously if you do nothing like the EU you wont be able to make mistakes. Cowards!!!

Brexit will be more of a mental break than anything else. The British isles are yoing to float away. Not alot will change except the fact that the UK will have ally more control over future things and be able to speak their mind and not be controlled by the EU. For example the EU cannot condemn china over its abuse of human rights because china has bought off greece and you need a unanimous vote so now the UK will be more politically unique than financially and with the markets.

The reason labour lost is because they are soo negative. All they do is put down boris and make it sound like it's the end of the world. Who wants a party like that in power. The UK is very powerful and doesnt need to bow down to the eU. They are an independent nation with a history to match. This is the century in which the UK will be back on the rise as they were in the 16th and 17th centuries.

  • noah
    noah 2 months ago

The UK can follow kind of what Ireland has done with low taxes. The EU is in decline so the UK was smart to get out while they could. Germany and france will destroy themselves trying to hold that roaring train on the tracks. The US and canada are the future not the EU. Russia is taking over the EU more and more and the millions of muslims.

  • noah
    noah 2 months ago

It's stupid to say they have to follow all of the EU rules or the US. I think it will be something in the middle. The US economy is the largest on earth. The US controls 27% of the world's wealth and the UK controls 36% so together the US and UK could be such a force. As we always have been. The EU is a joke. Only the UK has a military that can actually fight.

  • noah

It's because the labour party has moved so far to the left it gave the conservatives the opportunity to move to the middle and become and centrist gov. Labour is soo out of touch, they only listen to the rich collage communities and city folk. The conservatives are for the rich and also for the very poor. Making jobs to help people. Boris almost ran as a labour member when he ran for mayor of london so he is extremely center right.

"The benefits of Brexit" vs the "benefits" of the EU? The chief benefit of the EU for UK has been that EU membership has required NO serious work or thought from politicians in Westminster - EU membership has been sold to many as a safe place, not for any benefit we the people got from it, but for the easy ride it gave the politicians we elected! The UK electorate was there chiefly to PAY for it all. The BENEFITS of Brexit will, if Boris is true to his word, devolve to the citizens of UK from a government that actually works on their behalf, and the benefit of the country as a whole, Politicians will no longer be able to sit back doing little at all for us, only delivering at intervals the excuse that whatever the people want in terms of help, change in law, or consideration of their difficulties "We can't do that because the EU won't allow it." At least post-Brexit, it will be very clear exactly who has NOT done what the country needs, and therefore who will rightly suffer the consequences at the ballot box.. Accountability restored, we might look forward to restoring with it a belief that the country IS once more a democracy.

When, exactly, is this apocalyptic reckoning (which your ilk almost seem to be looking forward to) due to take place? 31/01/20, 31/12/20, or some other date? It's just that you people seem a bit vague on this point. It's almost like you're planning to say "That's because of Brexit" every time something bad happens, but "We haven't left yet" when something good happens. I'm sure that's not the case, so just so there can be no impression of bet-hedging, when exactly are you saying that we're Leaving, and that the economy is going to collapse (thus providing you with much joy as Leavers are "taught a lesson")?

Robert Colville really knows whats going to happen is trying to bumble and mumble his way around it. They do want to privatise the NHS, they do want less regulation, they will suck up to USA.
Mark this down you heard it here first, when there's chlorinated chicken on the supermarket shelves. You will have the Conservative government claiming it is all "safe and will mean bring the price of food down to help the consumer, and more money left in your pocket". At the same time the price of British chicken will go up because it's made at a higher standard.
So the poorest will suffer from lower quality food and the likes of Micheal Gove and Joach Rees-Mogg claiming its safe but will never eat it because they will be able to afford the higher prices.
I put it to channel four or any other news interviewer, when this happens is to have a plate of it ready for them to try and ask them to eat it. They never will.

Years of this nonsense. It never changes. Still, before long, we will finally see just how overblown Project Fear was. And those who dutifully parrot whatever hysteria the vested interests perform for them will regret spending all that time trying to look clever, only to end up looking anything but.

I'd liked to have heard more from the woman, who seemed composed and considered and altogether more interesting to me, but that Tory private school/Oxbridge type kept cutting across her to make almost unintelligible utterances in that absurd way of his (Harry Enfield like, as someone below says). She was certainly more pleasing to listen to even if I might not agree with what she had to say. As it is (after 37 minutes) I've no clear sense of where she was coming from, or trying to get to (i.e., her political disposition). [Credit to her for not showing irritation at being jackalled like that so frequently. That's true class.] Please have her on again along with someone who thinks a lot less of himself. The way she was jackalled and bundled out of the discussion at times was getting close to sexist (in what sense did GG moderate the thing?; if anything he made matters worse once or twice): I feel sure that if you had a bloke who spoke in that calm, composed and considered way (especially if he'd been educated at Trinity or Balliol or some such) he would have been given the time and space to make his points in full, some of them at least (it's not like this is a time-limited production). Because of this I'm pretty disappointed in this episode in what is generally an excellent and enlightening series (this is one of the few things in which I've given a fair hearing to people I disagree with very much).

There will be a fascinating period where government ministers will decide where they stand on issues. Which the public won't get a say in and once we are locked in that's it. Fascinating it's not the word I'd use. Seems like there will be no accountability for permanent rules.

Sylvester speaks well but has next to nothing to say, and Colville might have something to say but stifles it by his speaking. Perhaps less of the coffee mug pumping up and down might make a difference; after all, how many can walk in a straight line and chew gum at the same time.

Do you think the Labour members will respond any more favourably to being told who should lead them or how far left their policies should be by a bunch of Tories than the British public responded to being told Brexit would be bad for the country? The members will decide. They will choose to keep the socialist agenda regardless of how much Mr Gibbons and his gimpy chums "poo poo" and "fwar fwar" the idea. Corbynism is here to stay and you'll be eating your words Gibbons you twunt.
