  • Tick tock. WATCHMEN debuts this fall on HBO.
From Damon Lindelof and set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, this drama series embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own. The cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.
WATCHMEN is based on the graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons and published by DC.

This seems like a prime example of when they add cool shots and weird stuff in the trailer but it just doesnt add up in the actual story. The original Watchmen was great. I hope they know what they're doing with this and not just squeezing every ounce of profit from another beloved story they own rights to.

I was worried at first, but I'm excited to see a television take based on what is presumably Alan's original commentary on the fascism that inherently comes with many superhero stories. I feel that a cult is a very good way to illustrate this idea and really exaggerates that crucial aspect that many Watchmen adaptations don't make a point to truly explore.

    • Mats Mårtensson
      Mats Mårtensson 2 days ago

It's an alternate Earth where it's all ticking down towards mankind making mankind extinct and there's "masked mysterymen" running around. That's Watchmen in a nutshell.

  • ShimmySnail
    ShimmySnail 4 days ago

Except the entire point of the original Watchmen was that Ozymandias was right and Rorschach was wrong. He stopped WWIII by bombing all the major cities in the west and giving the superpowers an outside enemy to unite against. Ozy was willing to sacrifice millions to save billions, Rorschach wasn't. Both paid for their beliefs with their lives.

    • Mats Mårtensson
      Mats Mårtensson Day ago

@ShimmySnail "but if memory serves the project took the form of a huge monster that destroyed New York"
Almost. It didn't really destroy anything except a lot of windows etc. but killed over three million people in New York and telepathically sent horrible hallucinations around the world.
"and I was puzzled why they didn't just stick to the comic since it was way more pleasing, visually, but the effect on the plot was exactly the same."
It's just more streamlined, Ozymandias gets the science to do it with Dr Manhattan's help and he frames him as being radioactive so he also frames him as deliberately destroying several major cities as well instead of staging a giant space monster basically crashing in the middle of the most well-known major city.
"As for the reader making up their own mind, sure, I suppose one is free to conclude that deliberately killing millions to save billions was not worth it"
Nothing is ever "worth" anything so "value" is beside the point. We are free to ponder who is the more moral of the characters in the story since the story doesn't tell you, it's as simple as that.
      ", as Rorschach decided,"
But he _doesn't_ decide that. He sees it as Ozymandias killed millions so Ozymandias will "pay for it", he doesn't even see it as himself risking billions dying in the process, he just sees that as how things work. As a child Walter thought dropping nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the right call by the President because more people would have died had he not, for example.
"but you wouldn't find many rational people who would agree with him."
I am a rational person and I do not think killing millions to save billions is "worth it" since I have understood that "value" is a myth and I am a misanthrope. In other words, no result is objectively "worth" any effort and mankind can just stop having offspring and die out, that's what I currently think of mankind, I'm not impressed by how we're doing.
You kill one to save a billion or you kill a billion to save one but the universe won't care just like it wouldn't care if you killed off mankind to save one amoeba.
"That was part of the sucker punch of the ending, to me, that you get attached to Rorschach, he's the underdog, he was abused as a child, he sticks up for the vulnerable, but he can't think strategically like Ozy does, who is trying avert the end of the human race."
Yes, that is part of it, absolutely, although I would say the story is not banking on you getting attached to Rorscach, he is a deconstruction of the "monologuing hardboiled investigator walking the dirty streets lamenting America being trampled" with a mask on.
"Game theory, or bargaining theory, is higher mathematics, after all, and Rorschach is in many ways mentally ill. He's a psychopath who works for the good guys."
I wouldn't call him a psychopath but he is a mentally disturbed vigilante, yes. But there are no "the good guys" to work for in Watchmen. The closest to heroes are the Nite Owls and Silk Spectre II and they are all pretty self-absorbed.
      "Psychopaths don't have remorse."
Actually it's that they don't have empathy and Rorschach clearly does have some.
"Ozy, OTOH, does have a remorse."
I'm not sure I would call it that. It's more a sadness and disappointment in himself at "wasting resources" than the empathetic response we associate with remorse.
"They left it out of the movie, although there's an animated extra available that covers it, but the comic book that the homeless kid is reading about the pirate ship is the clue. A sailor ends up accidentally killing a bunch of his fellow townspeople, thinking he's saving them, and then ends up joining the murderous pirates by swimming out to their waiting ship."
That's in the graphic novel as well. The sailor didn't accidentally kill them, including the wife he was trying to protect, he had so convinced himself the pirates would have taken the town that that's all he sees them as but it turns out the pirates were just off-shore waiting for him to join them. That's appropriate for Rorscach as well, that through the horrors he lives through he has become as bad as the villains he sees himself as standing against, willing to risk the planet covered in nuclear winter for his uncompromising brand of justice.
"In the Watchmen comic, Ozy says at the end something like, "I feel like I'm swimming towards something." Meaning that he feels like he's done the wrong thing, or that he must still pay for doing the right thing because there's no forgiving mass murder, regardless of excuses."
The exact line is " *Jon... I know people think me callous but I've made myself FEEL every DEATH. By day I imagine endless FACES, by night... well, I DREAM about swimming towards a hideous... no, never mind, it isn't SIGNIFICANT...* " and he says this while in a meditating pose on a plinth with the ankh-symbol on it and in an earlier scene he tells his secretary (who he's about to have killed to take suspicion off himself) about the ancient beliefs about death as a journey. You're right that he considers what he's done as a "crime" and that he therefore is to "pay for it" and you're right that he also considers it "necessary" hence "the right thing" but that doesn't negate that he doesn't express actual remorse, instead he "makes himself feel every death" with his intellect as "payment". He has already admitted to the reader that he only feels kinship with Alexander the Great, the ancient Pharaohs etc. so that tells you something about his empathy for the three million modern day people he's killed.
Also, there is no such thing as "murder", that is myth as well. And forgiving is a subjective thing.
EDIT: If you think I sound like Dr Manhattan, well, you're not wrong.

    • ShimmySnail
      ShimmySnail 2 days ago

+Mats Mårtensson It's been a long time since I read the comics (I read them in 1991 or so, in fact it was that series that got me into comics to begin with), but if memory serves the project took the form of a huge monster that destroyed New York which Ozy tried to make look like was of alien origin, rather than a bunch of energy explosions by terrorists, and I was puzzled why they didn't just stick to the comic since it was way more pleasing, visually, but the effect on the plot was exactly the same. Outside enemy, America is humbled, Russians stop their brinkmanship and nuclear war is averted at the last minute on the doomsday clock.
As for the reader making up their own mind, sure, I suppose one is free to conclude that deliberately killing millions to save billions was not worth it, as Rorschach decided, but you wouldn't find many rational people who would agree with him. That was part of the sucker punch of the ending, to me, that you get attached to Rorschach, he's the underdog, he was abused as a child, he sticks up for the vulnerable, but he can't think strategically like Ozy does, who is trying avert the end of the human race. Game theory, or bargaining theory, is higher mathematics, after all, and Rorschach is in many ways mentally ill. He's a psychopath who works for the good guys.
Psychopaths don't have remorse. Ozy, OTOH, does have a remorse. They left it out of the movie, although there's an animated extra available that covers it, but the comic book that the homeless kid is reading about the pirate ship is the clue. A sailor ends up accidentally killing a bunch of his fellow townspeople, thinking he's saving them, and then ends up joining the murderous pirates by swimming out to their waiting ship. "Except the entire point of the original Watchmen was that Ozymandias was right and Rorschach was wrong."
No, the point is to let you (the reader) make up your own mind who the moral ones in the story are.
"He stopped WWIII by bombing all the major cities in the west"
That's the movie. In the graphic novel Ozymandias' plan is a little different.
"Ozy was willing to sacrifice millions to save billions, Rorschach wasn't."
Well, Rorschach is more than willing to put WWIII back on just to "avenge" the millions already sacrificed. So he's willing to sacrifice billions to save... his own worldview?
"Both paid for their beliefs with their lives."
Actually Ozymandias pays with his conscience. And he doesn't seem to have as big of a conscience as he himself thinks.
